While the new body-shaping garments are lighter and prettier than undergarments of the past, the ideology behind their creation has changed very little. Throughout this century, women have endured the pain of heavily boned corsets, the discomfort of breast flatteners, and the uncomfortable bulk of petticoats and knickers. Though technological advances may decrease the pain and discomfort, women still pad, distort, and squeeze their bodies to meet cultural expectations.

I wonder perhaps if the above thoughts might help and indeed be the basis of further informed discussion.

I have no need of padding. I certainly don't squeeze or distort. And I couldn't give a fig leaf if I don't meet cultural expectations!!!!!!!

I do like nice underwear though.

lol CD a roll-on was a stretchy girdle with suspenders attached that all good girls wore......even if you were a size 10!!

Sounds like a torture device... I'm old fashinoned, I still quite like tights!

lol China - I remember one night being stranded in London with my (male) best friend after having my bag and season ticket nicked. We ended up in the local filling station to buy me supplies for the morning (toothbrush, deoderant etc). They only had tights. In a rather loud (and drunken voice) I exclaimed "I am NOT wearing those - have you seen what they do to a bankrobber's face". He still cringes with embarrassment 15 years later.

Lol BM... Bless.... I tried wearing those hold ups with sticky stuff at the top once and I felt like a prize twerp. Plus I was in Venice at the beginning of febuary and it was utterly freezing. I ended up binning them in a restraunt toilets and going bare legged... much wine had to be consumed for this southern softie to risk the cold on my knees.

If I'm going out and about I wear tights. If I'm going somewhere dressy and indoors I wear stockings.
