I have been suffering with itchy skin lately, on and off, worse in the evenings when Im relaxing...I start to scratch, mainly my legs though, drives me crazy as no amount of scratching satisfies the itch, now this morning I notices great huge bruises all over my legs !! They are not painful but no idea where they have come from..am also itchy on various other parts of my body, underarms etc,...but seems to be bad on my legs...what could cause this ?? I dont have any allergies...although used to suffer bad uritcaria throughout my teens but seemed to have grown out of that.

I get that, especially in the winter. I use lashings of creme on my legs, but really you should see the doctor I think
unexplained bruising. you should see your gp.
I have to presume that the itching is present WITHOUT a skin rash as you havent mentioned this in your post, in which case just generalised itching without a rash can be due to many things. Are you taking any medication that preceded your itching? Are you suffering from any other seemingly unrelated disorder? It could well be a hypersensitivity to some foods as you have a past history of Urticaria.
It may even be psychogenic (nerves or stress) in origin.

The bruising may well be a local response to your itching.

Take Piriton or any other antihistamine in tablet form and see your doctor next week.
Anything like this needs a doctor. If you have personal worries they can cause skin upsets. Don't resort to untrained advice from people who haven't seen it.

Thank you everyone for your valid answers so far, guess I must just be run down...otherwise quite well in myself...have been taking antihistamines Benadryl mainly as a last resort to help with the itching....it is probably just a flare up then..
NOT that i'm suggesting this is apt for you PP but those symptoms can be caused if you like a drink Thats maybe something no-one would be keen to post on a forum and thats why its imperative that you or anyone else should see your GP for a blood test for an accurate diagnosis.

Yes Dris I have read that alcohol can cause this, but I doubt this in my case, I hardly drink, perhaps some wine at the weekend but that is all...someone told me that over use of antihistamines can cause bruising, as I have been using Benadryl for over 2 weeks now.. on and off as that is roughly how long I have had this itching.
Im glad you didnt think I was referring to you -its often difficult to phrase a response so no-one takes offence.
The itch must be driving you mad -i'd even nip in to speak to your Pharmacist if it could be the medication -they can be very helpful and have saved me a visit to my GP on a couple of occasions.Hope youre better soon.

Thank you Dris, I understood what you meant...so please dont worry about that...some people do read things in the wrong context....I guess a trip to GP next if it doesnt ease up, the antihistamines work really fast though which is a blessing as before I took them the itching was keeping me awake most nights scratch, scratch, scratch......fidget fidget fidget...
just a shot in the dark PP, are you taking Warfarin ? as you are probably aware this can cause bruising. As has been stated see your GP.
Purple_Popple.....I do appreciate your answers to my questions ????????
here here, well said Sqad, Ron.

Apologies Squad - in answer to your Q's...
No skin rash
Have had no other medication prior to this itching
Am currently taking Benedryl to alleviate

Thank you :)
Question Author
Oh and Ron - no am not on Warfarin either....
Purple...thanks, mu answer remains amended.
I've found my legs itch when I use an electric blanket. Could that be the cause of it?
Sqad -:)
Dris ;-)
I sometimes get dry itchy skin, and have started to use an emmolient cream, or sometimes Body Shop Shea Butter cream. I also asked my GP about the bruises that appear on my arms and legs at times. He said the when the bruises appear on the body that is when you should worry.
I have exactly the same experience. I bruise easily already and when I take benedry, it's markedly worse. Light scratching or rubbing causes huge bruises on my arms and legs. I'm hoping we get a real answer here. I've searched the internet without finding one myself.
