According to Joan Collins in todays newspaper there aren't too many beautiful actresses and actors, Angelina Jolie gets a mention! Joan says the real actresses with beauty were Grace Kelly Lana Turner Audrey Hepburn etc, although I did read once that Audrey Hepburn had cosmetic surgery! Is Joan right in her views! I agree with her choice and Tony Curtis was beautiful!

I think the actresses she mentions were extremely glamorous, they seemed more so because they were famous in times of austerity.
beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course but there is a lack of naturalness in the public eye these days, too many fake tans, eyelashes, boobs, filler bits and lots of hair extensions, not to mention airbrushing and extreme body sculpting.
Halle Berry is still in Los Angeles I believe - you'll go a long way to find an actress more beautiful than her.

Angelina Jolie? Gert serious!
angelina was more attractive in her tomb raider days, she looks stringy and sinewy at the moment.
I think what today's actress's lack in relation to those mentioned is class. The likes of Hedy Lamarr, Ingrid Bergman and Betty Grable had that in spades and that's the difference IMO.

The glam actresses were only ever photographed in glam situations, whereas these days the paparazzi delight in catching people without makeup or clambering awkwardly out of a car....
I don't see why glamour is so important. Personally I would much rather watch a gifted actor giving a great performance than a pretty one give an average performance.
I have never found Angelia Jolie attractive.

I must agree with JC about Grace Kelly - she was gorgeous.
In other countries!
Personally .. I'm an Eva Green fan : )
I don't think anyone could ever be more beautiful than the young Elizabeth Taylor.
craft I agree about Elizabeth Taylor but my fave was the young Brigitte Bardot
I have always admired Kelly Brook, but I must admit her assets are a major part of the appeal.
Lauren Bacall was beautiful, as was Vivien Leigh.
Louise Brooks, nuff said
Mattk - you must remember that in the time Ms. Collins is talking about, life, and celebrity were very different.

Screen stars were seen as almost angelic and mysterious, with a mystery that ordinary mortals could only gaze upon in awe. Critical perceptions of their work were far less detailed - it was enough that they shone from the screen.

Today's audiences are far more perceptive, and the notion of 'celebrity' has changed from those days, indeed only the adjective stays the same, everything else is very different.

So maybe what JC mourns is the passing of the 'stars' in Hollywood, but they have gone - as has the Hollywood glamour system - replaced by more 'human' film stars.
I think she's talking nonsense really. If she'd have said 'film stars used to be alot more glamorous than they are today', I would have agreed with that, which I think is andy's point as well.
Absolutely ludwig - in those days, 'film stars' were the icons of their time, and films, together with audiences, have moved on - and amen to that!
Well I was surprised that Kate Beckinsdale was chosen to play Ava Gardner - now Kate is very very pretty but she's no Hurricane Ava. Monica Belluci is very beautiful in the Ava/Liz Taylor mode - then theres Cate Blanchette and Tilda Swinton both stunning looking - in another way. I remember Joan Collins once saying she thought Sophie Ellis Baxter was lovely and I have to agree but lots of people disagree
