It's my mate's 40th birthday next month and I'm stuck for ideas. She has absolutely everything and has made it clear to everyone that she wants nothing tacky !! I don't want to spend more than £20. Any ideas please ????

I would presume that by nothing tacky your friend means that she doesn't want anything that say '40' on it. you could always buy her a nice bracelet or necklace - there are some lovely ones around. Or a bottle of champagne or send her some flowers.
Flowers, yes there is nothing as nice as the door bell ringing, and answering it to a man asking does so and so live here and handing you a bunch of flowers!! I know you do not get much for twenty pounds but maybe another friend would go into the present with you and you could then send her a fantastic bunch. Every lady loves a nice floral arrangement or a basket full of flowers.
You could get a calendar made up for her, using a dozen photos of friends and family. You can get these professionally done for about £20 I believe. Or is that what she would class as "tacky"?

Thanks all ! She has her house constantly filled with flowers cos she demands that her poor husband buys them for her every few days ! I once bought her a lovey ornament of a dog because it looked just like hers and she told someone it was tacky and she put it in the back room out of sight. It wasn't a cheap one either :-(
Not sure she would like a calendar. I think she would look down her nose at it. She really is a nightmare to buy for and to be quite honest, she won't be grateful, sadly.

She sounds a right charmer. You're a lucky person to have such a tactful and grateful friend.
May be she's actually saying , I don't want anything? Why don't you 'ask' her what she wants? She may say I want nothing but your friendship! I have fa friend who buys for my birthday & I really wish she wouldn't! I wish she would just believe me when I say to her I value her friendship more than anything material x
Pay upfront for a year for ok magazine or something similar .
Only just logged onto this post so you may well have solved your present problem by now. If not, how do think your friend would feel about a charity gift. i don't mean something you bought her from a charity shop but from the Good Gifts catalogue where you buy items for children/people in, say, Africa, and the person would get a gift certificate saying what you had purchased in their name.

We're at the stage of our lives where we really don't need anything and at Christmas our kids 'bought' us: 3 operations to restore eyesight to children, (£27 each) life saving medicine for someone in india or Africa (£10) an annual pill for 50 to save them from river blindness (£8). These are just 3 examples of the dozens of items from small amounts to large sums. You can also order online at www,goodgifts.org
