Extreme Tattoos

Many tattoos are not seen during the normal working day as clothing hides them.
But if a person can't find employment because they have BNP tattoo'd on their forehead, or a swastika on their hands, or even a sexually explicit picture on a part of the body that is not easily covered, should that person be entitled to benefits?
Would it be an easy way to stay on benefits on life?
A friend of mine is having trouble getting a job and she is convinced she is being discriminated against as she has tattoos on the edges of her palms, although they are not offensive in any way.
Any opinions on this? She's had body tattoos for years, but I told her she was plain stupid to have these latest two.

Many companies will not employ a person if they have a tattoo that is visible around their clothing - that's always been the way.
Although tattoos are far more "socially acceptable" than they used to be, I would agree that your friend made a mistake in getting those two.
As far as benefits are concerned..... you're probably right about the loophole there!

Obviously depends on the type of job.
For instance if I were an employer I'd never employ somebody in a white collar capacity if they had visible tattoos and were expected to be client-facing. But, if it was on a building site or in a factory, then I couldn't give a monkey's how many or where the tattoos were, just so long as they weren't offensive - such as a swastika.
The whole tattoo thing has always puzzled me, especially on women. A rose or a dolphin at the base of the spine may look good (although that's a matter of opinion) on a 20 year old with nice taut skin, but will look bloody ridiculous on a 50 year old and will have slipped down to the backside.
And as for tittoos - why somebody would want to deface and ruin something as wonderful as a pair of Tapas with a tattoo will puzzle me for as long as I live.

Not all 50 year olds have saggy skin flip-flop.I'm 41,female and have 4 tattoos, I only regret one of them...and that is becasue the tattooist did a bad job of it. The one I have at the base of my spine is in exactly the same place it was when it was placed there thank you very much!!!
I had the tattoos for my own personal benefit,not for the approval of others.
As to the op........it is probably your friend's visible tattoos that are stopping her getting a job,maybe she should look into getting some sort of make-up to cover them up for interviews.

I know this doesn't answer the question but i'd like to comment on flip flop's point of ..

By my reckoning, the vast majority of us will be tattoo'd somewhere by the time we get to the wrinkly stage, so I highly doubt we'll look ridiculous, rather it will be the norm.
