It's short for 'snake in the grass' - a snake being seen as a devious and cheating character - as per the serpent in the Garden Of Eden. A 'grass' is someone who tells tales to officialdom., getting someone into trouble. It's a commonly used phrase in the criminal fraternity, both in the U.S. and in the U.K.

thanks Andy, so 'to grass ' is to inform? rewards ?.....my friends daughter, along with some others, were in the school  loo , some were smoking, but all were laughing and giggling over this PL***** gi** L  mag,.. in comes this other girl, sees whats going on, leaves and runs to the Heads office to inform, grass ? on these others, now the Head is a friend of mine, and is somewhat fed up with this same girl running back and fore to report anything, everything, and anyone , but he does have his job to do, rules to follow etc. the naughty girls are grounded, one may be expelled ! is this one girl a grass ( as the others are now calling her ) spoil sport ,or just a self righteous nosy parker with nothing better to do ?
well they shouldnt have been smoking on school premises..and as for the magazine ..well its not exactly suitable reading for school children..so if they got grassed on well its tough..they go to school to be educated and those in authority should not turn a blind eye to such behaviour,,so if they get expelled tough.....where did the magazine come from..one of the parents homes that also will not give a dam..mullein
