If you drank a gallon of ethanol (pure alcohol) what would you actually die of (assuming that is enough to be a lethal dose)?

Having checked out things on Google it would not be a pleasent death which ever way you went!

Signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning (ethanol overdose) include:

Mental confusion
Vomiting
Seizures
Slow or irregular breathing
Bluish skin color or paleness
Unconsciousness

Alcohol affects the central nervous system, slowing breathing, heart rate and the gag reflex. This increases the risk of choking on vomit, which can cause death to people who are passed out (unconscious) from drinking too much. Also, blood alcohol level can continue rising even after the person has passed out.

So I'd rather have a cuppa thanks all the same!

This volume would not only overwhelm your liver, but would poison the blood - ie be present in such quantities that the blood could not perform its regular functions becuase it was too thin. you would also suffer as the inhibitory effects on the brain would cause that to stop functioning fully. Then the dehydratsion would knacker your kidneys.
