Does anyone actually keep a secret diary? Surely if you have a secret you don't want people to know about, the last thing you should do is write it down on paper and create evidence. Is there some kind of thrill factor, perhaps?

No.

If we have really secret secrets, we post them in ChatterBank.

lol jj! x
Not bloody likely.

I like JJ's answer.
Besides ... only teenage girls keep diaries.

(and secretaries, of course)
I always thought that a diary-by its very nature-is secret-because it is personal.....but that does not mean that everything that is written in it is ONLY secrets.

Britannica Concise Encyclopedia: diary
Top Home > Library > Miscellaneous > Britannica Concise Encyclopedia

Record of events, transactions, or observations kept daily or at frequent intervals; especially a daily record of personal activities, reflections, or feelings. Written primarily for the writer's use alone, the personal diary usually offers a frankness not found in writing done for publication. The diary form, which began to flower in the late Renaissance, is important as a record of social and political history. The most famous diary in English is that of Samuel Pepys. Other notable journals include those of John Evelyn, Jonathan Swift, Fanny Burney, James Boswell, Andr Gide, and Virginia Woolf.
Wrong,JJ...I've kept diaries thru the years.....just to write down thoughts and feelings....particularly during emotional times.
Maybe I am still a teenager...and don't know it...???
pastafreak.....excellent answer, but I wonder what % of these diaries were "edited" by the writer?
Read JS's question again.

If controversy and subterfuge, sexual or not had spattered you life, would you enter them into a diary?

That, I think, is what JS is getting at.
Hmmmm.....if finding that you are developing feelings for another person who was attached, while YOU were still attached......would that count as subterfuge.......?

You HAVE to write it down/or TELL someone....so yes-the diary would be an answer.

Have kept a thought record/diary before, they recommend it in cbt and it is good to see things written down. Helps get it clear in your head.

Might have to burn it though as don't want anyone to read it.
