Not sure what the rash is like but my son suffered from a red rash (hives) a few years ago which my GP said was an allergic reaction to something and prescribed piriton. It was there continually for weeks and I finally persuaded the GP to send him to the allergy clinic at the hospital. They knew staight away it wasn't caused by allergy but said it was urticaria and we would probably never know what caused it. They prescribed Clarityn which suited him better and although it kept under control well it was still present for months. Eventually after about 6 months it cleared up and only returned occassionally when he was unwell but he has been totally clear now for 3 years. However once we had the diagnosis from the hospital the rash didn't seem nearly as severe as though once he stopped worrying about it and I wasn't so concerned it got better. I know it is worrying seeing your child like this but hopefully they can reassure you at the hospital and things will get better.
Hi! Louise....sorry but Mondays and Thursdays are my snooker days.

Right.....the pain in the arms and legs changes everything...you need to see a Paediatrician or Dermatologist as soon as possible as there are a few other considerations now.
Henoch-Schonlein Purpura (HSP)

This is a distinct possibility. Google it and see what you think
