Someone I know is a diabetic & has a foot ulcer. I have looked on the internet regards Manuka honey. There is plenty of info on the healing benefits of this particular honey. Has anyone any direct experience of the healing properties of Manuka honey for ulcers?

I have seen it on a number of patients. It works well. Diabetic foot ulcers are particularly difficult to heal. Does this person have any nursing input with regards to their ulcer? If so tell them to suggest to the nurses they try the Activon range. The severity of the ulcer will determine which product to go for as it comes as an ointment, a mesh impregnated with honey and also an alginate impregnanted with honey.

The ointment would be useful on a small and relatively dry ulcer. The mesh is good for larger areas. The alginate is good for wounds that leak as it absorbs the exudate. All will require a secondary dressing, and this will also depend on the sate of the ulcer.

alijangra - Thankyou for all your information & the link, I will pass it on!
I've been using this for a couple of years, I have breast cancer ( inopperable ) and was prescribed this for the ulcer the cancer has caused, the nurse dresses it 3 times a week with the honey mesh dressing, it can't be cured but the honey stops it getting infected. I also knew an old man who had a leg ulcer who was being treated with dressings and antibiotics from the doc, he'd had the ulcer for about 2 years and it wouldn't heal so I told him about the honey and after about 2 months it had healed completely so there's a lot to be said about it. My husband is not diabetic according to the doctors, but is with the home tests, however, he had an ulcer on his foot for almost twelve months, it was horrid, and so difficult to treat on the sole of his foot. Tried numerous things, including Manuka honey, and also some Dermawound.

The Dermawound did reduce the size of the 'hole' by about 50%, and cleared up a smaller ulcer on his other foot. We did get a full refund as it was guaranteed to give results. We then got some Youki cream, which reduced it again by another 50% of the remaining size.

and finally, dont laugh this is absolutely true, my husband decided, in his wisdom to use superglue, and within a week it had gone. (I wouldnt recommend superglue though, he is just stupid, and as he has raynauds he cant feel his feet anyway, so any stinging from the glue he didnt know about)

I think when the skin starts to heal and go hard, using a pumice stone or similar to remove dead skin really helps.

Thanks everyone for all your answers!
aliangra, out of interest, why should a diabetic not use a pumice stone, it wasnt actually a punice stone my husband used, but one of those feet file things that removes hard skin, and the doctor told him to use it.
