What is the thing that American people call "mono"? not sure if that's how it's spelt. Is it tonsilitis or something like that?

I believe it's mumps.
I think it's a bit like glandular fever..

nope, mono is infectious glandular fever. Its flipping horrible.

I read in a link that mono is only suffered the once..isn't mumps the same? however glandular fever can be contracted more than once, I think?

Oh I dunno...lol.
Glandular fever stays in your system, so you can keep getting it over a period of months, I think once you have gotten over it you will never get it again. My doctor mistreated mine, thought it was tonisilitis, the antibiotics sort of reacted with the virus and gave me an awful rash. Great big pink spots all over my body, it was like a comedy rash.
