I am currently taking flying lessons and am coming up to my first solo flight. My instructor has said that I will need to pass a medical before this happens. Can anyone tell me what is involved in this medical and whether many people fail?

I used to hold a glider pilots certificate, which you don't need a medical for, but several glider pilots I knew had PPL's as well. It is not a mega medical. It just checks you are in reasonable fitness ie no heart problems or anything that is likely to make you collapse at the controls. Eyesight is checked, but you are allowed to wear glasses/contacts. If you have been allowed to fly so far by your instructor, you should have no problems.
