Any tips on getting out more? I've recently moved to a new area, am single and in late twenties, i don't drink or feel comfortable in clubs, all I seem to do is go to work four times a week, go to sleep, eat and sit on computer, don't wanna' wake up in ten years and think what a waste, where should I go? money is quite tight , feel so isolated and in a rut. The friends I do have I only see rarely and only talk to on the phone, need something more in life, would be helpful if people could give me their experiences of how they got themselves out of similar ruts.

not literally sit on computer, sry wrote in rush tho' don't know why cos' not doing much
Awww hon, I've moved to a completely new area quite a few times now where I was single and didn't know anyone or have any family near.

Get out and do some volunteer work or join some clubs or something to meet people and fill your time.

What do you do? Is there any social scene at work?

What about a local gym or some classes there to meet others and have something different to do?

Thanx Jenna,

I just cant be bothered half the time!

Am a student nurse, get on with colleagues at work and college but feel like I'd like my social life to be seperate from work.

your suggestions are spot on its just a case of getting the motivation to do something about it!

How did you give yourself the push when you moved to new area to get out more?
I used to make a really big effort to get chatting to people and going on social events and such and getting involved.

There must be a load of things you can get involved with at college really cheaply, what kind of stuff do you like to do?

You do have to be pretty self motivated though and not just wait until things come to you. Just get nattering to people and suggest going for a coffee or something or get talking about films or music and such and see if they fancy going to see a film or gig.

Study groups can also have a social side and help you to get to know people. Do some studying together then go and have a drink and get to know each other better, you all have something in common already.

There are so many volunteering opportunities too around. Contact your local volunteer bureau or ask a local charity if they need any help with admin or such.

Try these...

Why not try and organise something, a club or similar involving something you enjoy. I used to run a climbing club at college and we used to have a great laugh.

Question Author
Jenna its weird you should suggest a climbing group I was just looking at the college one online, have always fancied doing that! did you have to provide your own equipment? thats only thing stopping me reckon equipment would be pretty expensive but if its provided i shall go for it.

Volunteering is a good thing to do but it's not for me at the moment, I was a csv three years ago for six months really enjoyed it, would recommend it to others considering it.
College had some equipment for when we went out in the wild and we borrowed the minibus.

When we went climbing at a local centre usually the equipment was available there. we went to a wall in Chester and usually climbed out round Shropshire and Wales.

Check with your college and see if they have anything available and maybe a member of staff who's into it who could take you all.

There may be a climbing wall near you could organise a trip or trips to over the winter and if it's a success you could organise some outdoor stuff when the weather's better.

It used to be quite popular, more so with the lads, I was an RAF cadet as well and a load of the lads from that used to come.

Whereabouts are you, will try and find something in your area for you.

x
