Recovering from an arthroscopy

Hello

I had an arthroscopy of my left knee nearly three weeks ago, and it still gives me pain when using stairs or trying to sit down/stand up. I was told it would be ten days to get better by the nurse and four weeks by the doctor. Prior to this little injury, I was a dancer and I'm finding it quite hard watching my body turn to mush- does anybody have any suggestions of any low impact exercise I could do until I can dance? I need to build up my 'vastus medialis'?? Basically my thighs, but don't want to aggravate any healing process going on. Thanks all.

Grab yourself a pilates DVD - it's all low impact but focuses on slow, controlled exercise, you can leave out the exercises that agrravate your condition and you may find this helps - the knee is a beggar when it's in recovery - I've had four cartiliges out and have never recovered as quickly as the 'Medics' said I would - if you're dancing, you're probably battering you're joints, you should take Glucosamine Sulphate - marvellous for the joints; get a high strength & take regularly (1000mg or higher) - hope you recover soon.
I had this op in November, two weeks recovery I was told, I'm now waiting for another op to take out the rest of the cartilage, in five months, and have been told at work, if I'm not doing my job in three, (train driver), i'm out.

If I was you, go back to your gp, and get a referral back to the consultant that did it.

Of cours, its possible, that yours really is just taking its time healing, but get that referral just in case, and Good luck.

I had this operations when i was 16 (5 years ago...). Also on my left knee, after i had injured myself playing football.

Healing does take time so don't rush anything. There are some good machines down the gym for you to build up your thigh muscles. If you're a member ask a trainer to show you around some useful equipment.

Nosy Rosy's advice is brilliant. not only pilates but also the Glucosamine Sulphate. I had two operations on my knee as i snapped my ligament and also had cartilage removed. Throughout my healing process i took pills which were good for my cartilage and joints - possibly the ones she mentions.... if i remember i'll let u know!

that was all really reassuring, it does feel like its taking forever but maybe its meant too! Just found a DVD of my mum's- Pilates For Beginners (can you believe it??) so will get cracking! thank you everybody
