Today I went for a thorough STD test, not becasue ive been carless in the past, but just because i wanted to make sure. The nurse took samples from my throat urethra and cervix and looked at them under the microscope and told me that although she could not see any problems they were required to send them away for second opinion. I forgot to ask her what STD's she was looking for in the slides. Could anyone tell me? I also gave a sample of blood (a big deal for me as i have a phobia of needles and blood - im proud of myself) and i also gave a sample of urine. what would they test these samples for? i know my urine sample is tested for chlamydia, but would it not have been looked for under the microscope as well? i would like to kow about what she looked for and couldnt find on the slide to slightly ease my mind (i get paranoid too) thanks for any help. (i cant ring up the clinic becasue its not open again until friday, but i may ring up another if no one has any ideas. thanks

I just have to say I think these responses have been really harsh and uncalled for!

I'm really sorry I don't know the answer to your question, lady, maybe someone at a clinic would be more helpful. Hope everything's okay, honey. WS xxx

Dont listen to that cr@p. Well done you for having a positve approach to your sexual health. Unless people are virgins or celibate they are kidding themselves they are not at risk. Only a complete fool would claim to know exactly who their current partner has slept with in the past and feel they are not at any risk. Genital warts are also relatively easily passed on even when people use condoms. Before I had unprotected sex with my partner, I insisted we both had a full std check. He was a bit funny about it until I provided the statistics on the prevelance of std's in this country. You are also risking your future fertility.

As a matter of interest, I worked in a day surgery unit as a student where surgical terminations of pregnancy were carried out. Contrary to popular belief, many of the patients were married women in their late 20's and 30's with high flying careers and the pregnancy was an inconvenience to them. Chlamydia tests were performed as a routine and many of these women were shocked to find they had it.

Also, there is more drain on the nhs in treating the stds than the testing of them so get your facts straight guys. If everyone took the responsible attitude of this young lady then maybe we wouldnt have some of the worse std statistics in Europe. I cant believe your holier than thou stance on this. Its attitudes like that that stop young people from getting tested and treated or educated.
i feel somewhat oblijed to defend ladygarden here. I feel she could not have doe anything more correct my going to have a STD test. SO dot.hawkes and bobtheturkey. What would you have miss ladygarden do. Would you have her go around unwittingly spreading cylamidia etc which i might add would cost the NHS a heck of a lot more.

Or would you have her do the correct thing which would be to get herself checked out.

Really you lot should feel ashamed at the way you have treat this woman

I hope this incident doesnt cause you to think badly of all of us on AB its just the few which can be annoying

wow dot and bob - whats with you two!!! That was quite over the top i think you owe ladygarden (good name by the way) an apology or at least state for the record that you have never had unprotected sex with more than one person who has also never had unprotected sex with anyone else, i think that is the only way you will be able to maintain such a moral highground / highhorse (not sure of the right saying now i'm so p1ssed off with you two)

I'm sorry i can't answer your question ladygarden but i wanted to lend my support, i too have been to the sexual health clink before to get myself fully checked out as i too am a mere moral (unlike the other posters obviously) and have had unprotected sex with a previous partner (who i was with for over 4 years) before i had unprotected sex with my current partner we both went to get checked out just to make sure that there was no problems we didn't know about - i assure you that this is the responsible thing to do and it might not have been very romantic but if either some of us had passed anything to the other i don't think we would have been able to live with ourselves.

More people should be getting themselves checked out as sexually transmitted diseases are on the increase all over the UK, i am sure the nhs is much happier funding checkups to preventing the spread of STDs rather than dealing with an epidemic.

Ladygarden Im sure you have nothing to worry about and good luck getting an answer to your question, and again sorry for the behaviour of some of the AB users.

both me and my boyfriend both went today to ensure if we have something thats not showing any symptoms, then we can get rid of it before we pass it to each other if we ever start to have unprotected sex. if thats not responsible, i dont know what is? thanks for the helpful and supportive comment those who gave. xx
A burden on the NHS, !!!!! well done ladygarden for bein sensible about your sexual health.

I think the cervical smear looks for signs of the HPV virus, which can cause genital warts and rarely cervical cancer. They look at thousands of these samples every year though and they are really good at it, so if the nurse says it is fine, then I wouldn't worry at all.

Well done for getting checked out, it's the responsible thing to do. Especially well done if you are scared of needles!

i wish i was that sensible?
Isn't asking questions like this what it's all about here? If you haven't got anything worthwhile saying then why not say nothing.

From the amount of problems I've seen one of you post on here, following previous lack of attention to your own health, you're the shining example of how to "burden the nhs"

dot.hawkes - there is no need to be so rude, what about people who are in long-term relationships and use alternative methods of contraception? you only need to have $ex with one person to catch an STD and you can hardly call having one partner promiscuous. also why do you assume Ladygarden has been careless? do you not realise there are some STD's you can catch even if the guy wears a condom? I also think it's mature of Ladygarden to pluck up the courage to be tested, alot of people find the idea daunting, so dont go which means if they have got an STD they could unknowningly pass it on to another partner which means the problem escalates.

Ladygarden - if you had to give a blood sample then i'm guessing they would be testing for HIV and syphilis, but i was under the impression that you specify whether you want this test done or not. the samples have to be sent away to a lab to be cultured (the cells from the sample grow and multiply over a few days which gives a more accurate reading i believe) .The nurses / doctors dont sound like they were very informative.
