I can't get up!

My problem is that I just love sleeping! I need a good 8 hours a night, so I always set my alarm for 8 hours time, but then I regularly put it on snooze (every 8 mins!) for two hours or more. If I have a reason I need to get up, eg. work, then I'm fine, but it's on other days, when I still have things I need to do, but things that aren't quite so urgent. I know it's self-inflicted, but when I'm half asleep I don't seem to see sense. Does anyone have any ideas to help me get out of bed in the morning? Thanks!

I know this may sound strange but I am weird. I have to get up at 8 so I set my alarm for this 6 this way when the first alarm goes off I can reset it for 8 then go back to sleep getting a nice earned lay in :-)

kaz, Put your alarm as far away as possible from your bed, so that you have to get up to turn it off.

Get up at the same time every day, no exceptions. Make it a strict rule, then it will soon become a habit.

As you're drifting off to sleep, tell yourself you're about to enjoy a deep, restful sleep and that you'll wake up fully refreshed at x o'clock in the morning. Then visualise yourself springing out of bed at that time, feeling really great, and getting right in the shower.

The first few times you do this you might still be struggling with your 'need' to stay in the snuggly warmth of the bed, but if you persevere, you'll find it comes naturally after a while to actually do what you've imagined - that is, you'll find yourself waking up exactly on time and getting straight up - and it'll feel great! You'll be starting to use your internal alarm, and once you've managed to do it you'll find it's dead easy (because it's natural).
I had to train myself to get up properly, and now after my alarm goes off I get up within a minute. I've also trained myself down to 7 hours sleep over the course of last year. I'm going for 6 1/2 by the end of this year.

i can sympathise with you as i am the same. i seem to need so much sleep! i could sleep well over 8 hours each night, i love sleeping! I have so much trouble getting up in the morning, it's an effort to force myself awake. i set my alarm early on week days so i can snooze it and wake up bit by bit. But at the weekend, if i don't have to get up, i will stay alseep for as long as i need.

How about making sure everything is ready the night before. your clothes ready and near the bed etc. Just so you don't have to do a lot before going out.

I entirely sympahtise, I have always had trouble getting up, and can sleep the clock round if left.

Cold turkey works for me. I don't have a 'snooze' button on my alarm. When it goes off, I make myself get up immediately, if i lie still for a moment, or even think about 'another few minutes' I will be asleep again.

It is hard, but I feel a sense of satisfaction for having overcome what is a major problem for me. At 51 I accept it is never going to change - roll on retirement!

I'm not a morning person either, so I know how you feel Kaz!

When I was working, I had to have everything organised the night before, ready for the morning. So once out of bed, it was cuppa tea, breakfast, read the paper, shower, dress & out of the door!

Oh, all that was after I'd tidied round, hoovered, put the washing in the machine, fed the cat, put the bin out..........!

If you have a partner make them keep a cold wet flannel beside the bed. I personally find that shoving this under the nice warm duvet is a great way of making my other half get out of bed when he won't!! :-) x

....or if you don't like the fannel thing try drinking loads just before bed then when you wake up you will need the loo so badly you will not be able to go back to sleep.....I am serious this actually works!!! x

I'm now going to torture my bed bug wife with your wet flannel idea Danni, as she's just like a great big doormouse and no matter how long she's been asleep can't get up in the morning. She can work all night and have virtually no sleep but if she goes to bed normally then she can't wake up in the morning. That'll teach her:)
