last night when i got in my usually affection kitten didn't run to meet me at the door and was v quiet, I noticed he had a birght red bum and on further investigation noticed diarrhea in his litter tray.

I'm guessing this is from something he's eaten he shouldn't (I caught him eating tuna in oil that I'd left out earlier last night) and everyone says not to worry, kittens eat stuff they shouldn't and learn their leson the hard way (he's 4 months old). I'm just bit worried, and want to know how best to make him feel better.

this morning he was back to his usual energetic self, although I still found a bit more diarrhea in the tray, his bum wasn't as red though.

any advice? he's eating dry food but won't touch his felix this morn.

I would keep an eye on him today. Give him rice mixed with a little cooked chicken or boiled white fish for a few days, instead of cat food. Tuna could have upset him - tinned tuna is usually salty. Don't give him any milk (cats shouldn't have milk anyway)/ However, if there is any sign of the diarrhea tomorrow, I would consult a vet. Don't leave it longer than thaat.

Although blood in faeces can indicate something serious, it can also happen when a cat has a tummy upset and is quite common - but again, if there is still blood tomorrow then a visit to the vet is essential.

no there's no blood in it I checked that, he seemed his usual self this morning so hopefully it was just something he ate. But yes if it goes on til tomorrow will go to the vet. have left him out plenty of water - he normally drinks milk and it hasn't upset his tummy to date, when he drinks the water for some reason he sticks his paw in it and then makes himself jump by splashing himself - sweet but weird!

Glad he's getting better. Take care with the milk though. If possible leave it out altogether, or only give him a little occasionally as a treat. Definitely don't give it to him for a few days, until you know he is completely OK.

This is quite informative

My cat will only drink water from the flower vases or any drink of water that I have in a glass!!!!

yeah, max too - he'll drink the squash by my bed and even tried to get involved with a gin and tonic on the weekend! but he won't drink the water from his bowl :-) will give the milk a rest for a few days see how he goes.

thank you

You sure that he didn't drink too much gin and tonic at the weekend, pagey3!!! He probably was just suffering from a hangover yesterday! (just joking)

Best wishes.

You should not feed him anything for twenty four hours, just make sure he has fresh water available at all times and definately stay away from the milk.
