Hi plop, getting black permament dye out of your hair is only achieveable by having it stripped out, or by growing it out, as you cant colour over it.

You could try temporary dye to see if you like it first.
Oh my God, stop! Don't dye your hair black using permanent dye! My natural colour is mousey blah brown, and I had fabulous blue/black hair for about a year, and have never regretted anything so much! The dye started making my hair thin, so I decided to stop dying (um, so to speak). I went to a hairdresser, who tried to strip the colour out of it. The problem was that the years of dye (it had been all shades before black) had left my hair in a terribly dry state, and the stripping turned it into straw. That was about 4 years ago, and my hair has never fully recovered. The only way is to get you hair cut really short when you revert back to your original colour - that's what I should have done. It's caused me nothing but stress since then, the ends are still dry, and it's definitely not as thick and glossy as it used to be. Sniff! Use a wash-in toner first to see if you like it, and then use semi-permanent. Believe me, it'll save you so much stress in the long run. I honestly wish I had done it that way - I'll never touch permanent dye ever again (well, until I go grey).

There is no way you could strip the colour out yourself. You would have to have it done professionally with a bleach shampoo and it would be dry and there is no recommendation that it would come out perfect. In the long run most people have to go short. If you have short hair to start with it would not be such a bad thing. You could try a semi permanent colour with no peroxide in (don't mix anything together). It would only last about 6 washes. You could probably get a black spray in colour or mousse.Vosene is good for getting some colour out but only for semi permanents not permanent.

my advice is don't do it unless you are a goth!
