Has any research been done on the health and psychological effects of vaping? Inhaling lungfuls of vapour on a regular seems risky to me, containing nicotine could mean they're addictive:

Not all vapes contain nicotine but the ones that do will be addictive.  It will be decades until the long term effects of vaping is known but there is already concern about popcorn lung

Other reports claim vaping does not cause popcorn lung.

I was surprised to see an advert for XQS on TV yesterday (I may have been watching YouTube), a brand of white snus. This is also a health crisis in the making and is becoming popular with young people

It worries me. Cigarettes are hidden away, but these potentially addictive and harmful things are displayed like sweets. I would ban them now.

They do serve a legitimate purpose, to help people stop smoking. I would ban the pretty coloured, flavoured ones that are clearly aimed at youngsters and treat them like cigarettes at point of sale. Only to be sold by those currently licensed to sell tobacco products and at a similar price point

I don't get how kids might think it's cool to smell like a strawberry muffin.....

Vaping and smoking are not the biggest threat to health in this country. That "accolade", if you can call it that, belongs to alcohol, the affects of which are 10 times the affects of smoking. But people don't believe that, because virtually everyone uses alcohol. And that says it all.

As you say, most people drink alcohol. Many of them drink occasionally, many drinks within limits.

Most people who drink alcohol aren't harmed by not harm other people.

Alcohol in moderation can be beneficial.

None of the above is true for smoking and time will tell about the long term health effects of vaping and snus.

The World Health Organisation states that no amount of alcohol is safe,

I suppose everybody could just mind their own business and not try to heal the ills of the world, concentrating instead on their own shortcomings, foibles and addictions.

Can't see it meself though.

Many institutes and bodies state that moderate amounts of alcohol is beneficial, such as this one

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4053968/

Theories change all the time. One minute fat is bad, next it ain't that bad but sugar is the new poison.  I reckon an occasional relaxing glass of whatever you fancy does you more good than harm. Just take things in moderation.

Meanwhile if vaping was so good at stopping smoking habits that it is preferable to other means then it could be put on prescription for the duration of the course.

For the general public recreational vaping is simply an antisocial behavour that unscrupulous companies saw as a way to make a fortune from when society finally started clamping down on smoking. It shouldn't have been allowed, it took long enough to restrict smoking, but like so many things these days (such as scooters and overpowered cycles on roads) it was allowed by government that doesn't give a darn about the people or the society it's actions and inactions are creating.

It is common here where I live to see grouos of school kids outside the local shops all 'vaping', and half of them are no older than 12/13. I'd like to know how they can afford it for a start!

It's the same every time something new appears on the market. Nothing gets done until it's too late. I remember in the 50s. ''If you're offered drugs , just say NO.'' Fat lot of good that slogan did.

Could we adopt 'vapist' as a term for users? Maybe the similarity in sound to rapist would dim the perceived glamour, stranger things have happened.

Allowances would be made for those with an existing speech impediment.

I think it's a risky habit but my daughter-in-law, grand-daughter and grandson all vape.  Never do it in front of me because they know I don't approve.  Have told the young ones about popcorn lung but makes no difference.  I smoked for 40 years so can't really preach.

we've snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. We got shot of the disgusting habit of smoking only to replace it with something just as bad. The innevitable comparison with alcohol of course emerges but the main difference is that I don't go around pouring a pint of stella down the throats of strangers. ....and before 10cs pipes up with his usual "passive smoking is harmless" routine, I don't care if it's harmless I don't want to smell it, ditto whatever sheet they are vaping.

Passive smoking is harmless. It never made anyone ill. Some people have allergies to various things. Smoking is one of them. But there's no doubt it does make your clothes stink.

The effects of alcohol far outweigh the effects of smoking. Domestic violence; town centre violence; after hours violence; death on the roads; absenteeism. None of those can be attributed to smoking, so just think about that while you have your next glass of wine. And the next. And the next. And........

The harmless chemicals in a cigarette are consumed by the smoker, not those around the smoker.
