There could be many reasons why he needs a catheter and a bag. He could have had surgery and this is temperary, he could be waiting for an operation on an enlarged prostate gland and has problems urinating, he could have a nerve problem and not want to use male pads. There are lots of reasons for this. The local hospital or Dr. Surgery might have a specialist nurse who could give advice

I spent 11½ months living with a catheter, due to my prostate gland having enlarged so much that I was unable to urinate.  At the end of that time a simple operation (performed while I was conscious) was all that was needed to fix the immediate problem.  [In my case the tissue removed turned out to be cancerous but simply having an enlarged prostae gland doesn't necessarily mean that a man's got cancer].

So the man you refer to might simply have an enlarged prostate gland which, on its own, is definitely 'no big deal'.

However there are many other reasons why someone might need a catheter inserted.  So, without any further information available to us, it's pure guesswork.

He may not have a catheter. Many men have benign enlarged prostates that make them unable to properly control their bladder. Some prefer to wear a urinary sheath which is very much like a stick on condom with a tube that carries the urine to a bag. No internal catheter.

It is an alternative to bulky incontinence pads.

My dad had one as he hated incontinence pads

I chose to use one for a short while until the consultant prescribed me drugs that stopped the urgent need to wee many times a day

Hoping that you are feeling better now, jinnyjoan. xxx
