In big toe, it could be gout. I believe it's a form of arthritis.

I've not experienced it, but other Aber's have mentioned it.

I often get pain in three of my toes on my left foot. It wakes me up sometimes and is horrible.I use Voltarol - the strongest one - and it really helps.

Rest, ice & and anti inflammatory tablets, should help, until you vist your GP? 😊

Have you been tested to see if it's rheumatoid arthritis rather than osteo( wear and tear type) if it is then it's a completely different set of treatments,  the only reason I ask is that RA often starts in the feet, osteo far less often. As it's usually in the bigger joints

If it is gout, you need Allopurinol to help prevent further attacks. Also, fairly strong painkillers like Naproxen. See your GP. If you can...

Cherries are good for gout. Amazon sell cherry pills. 3 months supply for £9.99. I have just sent for some as I have gout occasionally.

Thanks all, I just thought it was a bit of arthritis, and "nothing to worry about"...

Gout is very painful, I doubt it is that.

^^^ I'm not sure that I understand your comment, 237SJ.

From Smurfchops' post: "In big toe, it comes and goes and can be very painful".

From my NHS link: "The main symptoms of gout are . . . sudden severe pain in a joint – usually your big toe . . . "

Putting those two quotes together strongly suggests gout to me.

I’ve had gout in the big toe, the knee, the elbow and the wrist. Not all at the same time.  The knee one hurts a lot, I couldn’t drive. The toe one is incapacitating and excruciatingly painful. It does eventually pass.

Now 91, I had gout for the first time a couple of months ago. The agony lasted for 3 days; and then another bout last week which soon passed. Since then I've found several people who suffer from it and none of us gobble huge quantities of Stilton cheese or guzzle port.
