Can a constipated, possibly impacted bowel press on a sciatic nerve and increase pain?

I found this on the internet A large amount of stool in the colon or rectum can create pressure on the surrounding nerves, including the sciatic nerve, which runs down the leg

Can't answer that, Andy but do you need a colonic irrigation perhaps?

It certainly can. Try laxatives or a pessary

Tilly - not asking for myself, but some would suggest that for me on an hourly basis!

Thanks all.

It might change the way that you walk, lie or stand - maybe resulting in a nerve pinch.

Has your doctor prescribed medication for it?  Some painkillers can cause constipation.

Have you visited the NHS site? https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/sciatica/

I hope it gets better soon.  It is a horrendous pain.

Wolf  - I'll pass on your good wishes.

I'm having issues with both sciatica and bursitis at the moment, and I don't have any bowel issues in the way you describe, quite the opposite. Mind you, that's not to say an impacted bowel wouldn't.

Misery whichever way you look at it ☹️

Don't suppose this applies to you Andy, but each time I was pregnant I had sciatica due to the expected one pressing on the sciatic nerve, vanished as soon as baby arrived....

Haras - It doesn't apply, because I am not the sufferer I'm delighted to say, it sounds horrific!

well I had a terrible time some months ago and again recently.  Excuse the rudeness 0-  but it wouldn't come out or in.  I was distracted so I jumped to the shower and turned it on extremely hot and put the hose to the bum area and suffered as as hot as I could.  I then jumped back on to the toilet and away it melted it away.  Like heaven.

Phew ~ JennyJcoan I must get my shower working,     Thank you.

😎

when your bowel is backed up it can put extra pressure down in your lower back and irritate the sciatic nerve, making the pain feel worse. Drinking more water, eating fiber-rich foods, and going for short walks can help things move along.
