His father travelled about 300 miles to check out his flat and make funeral arrangements. He had a Green funeral yesterday.  The shock was when his father told me he had hung himself.  Finding it so hard to believe it as to me there are better ways of ending your life than hanging don't you think?

I read Hesse's treatise on suicide in Steppenwolf. Basically he thought there are 2 types of people - those who think they will eventually commit suicide & those to whom it would never enter their head.I must admit to being in the first camp. If I find life becomes intolerable it will be my right to end it.There are easier, less painful & less distressing ways...

How very sad to have so much troubling you that you felt you had no option to to end it - no matter what way.

May he now rest easy.

O god that is awful

I feel so sorry fo the whle family

hanged

I prefer the option to soldier on myself.

Poor man, The family must be devastated and suicide  must make it harder to bear.

Reminds me of a friend of mine.  I think depression ran in her family.  Her Mum came to stay and my friend went out somewhere.  When she came home, her Mum had hung herself from the bannisters.  The balance of their mind is disturbed so they don't think rationally.

My foster brother did the same when he was 21, we only discovered how troubled he was after he was gone and we cleared out his bedsit.

Reading his diaries opened our eyes to how much he had suffered and how he felt he had no choice.

Very sad situation

He was so so happy when he left me and my dog that he so loved on the Sunday evening.  I can't believe he never wanted to see see him and walk him again.

However I do believe he was on some spectrum and I can't remember what it's called.  Buenchico will know I'm sure.

How awful.  Poor man.  Did he ever give any indication that he was suffering, LB?

Sorry, cross posted.

Not to me Naomi.  Although I have since found out from someone who went to his funeral that he discussed whether to stop taking his anti-depressants or not.  We dont know what he decided.

Back in the early 70s, one of my cousins took himself off to a disused railway shed and did the same there. It was some time before his body was found so it had to be a closed coffin.

This was his third and final attempt following tablets and head in the oven.

Ken a disused shed was where mine went.  He wasn't found until the 3rd day after.

He now rests in a beautiful meadow with my butterfly and bee seeds spread around him.

"better" in what way? do you mean more effective, or less suffering?

Question Author

Less suffering bednobs.  I'd rather my loved ones found me asleep on a sofa than hanging from a rafter by a rope around my neck.

I think that even taking tablets there is not guarantee that you will go peacefully!

I would imagine how everybody else feels about it is probably the last thing on the mind of someone who wants to suicide

//I would imagine how everybody else feels about it is probably the last thing on the mind of someone who wants to suicide//

Not true - I have contemplated suicide in the past but chose to refrain because of the effect it would have on my family & friends. Just sayin'

I don't believe there are just 2 types of people regarding suicide. I suspect a great many have had such thoughts at various times in their lives, when feeling really down. But they know, if they analyse their thoughts, that they aren't seriously planning it yet.  It is simply an option to ponder, one that seems to be a solution. Then, after soldiering on for a time, things seem to improve as the mood lightens and it's clear it had been just their mental state that dragged them further down than was necessary.
