I am looking to join an NHS dentist down here in Hampshire. Nearly all of them stated that, “this dentist is only taking new NHS patients that have been referred.”

My doctors couldn’t help me when I asked them.

What should I do?

You may have to go private
If the GP couldn’t advise you ask the dentist who they need a referral from.
Have you looked at MyDentist? They do cheaper private dental care with something they call MyOptions. It's still expensive but not as bad as their private dentistry. There are some in Hampshire e.g.

Thanks for that, all. At this rate it might bee cheaper to fly back up to Northumberland and go to my old dentist. Lol.
Call NHS Customer Contact Centre on 0300 311 2233, hopefully they will help

Thank you very much, barry. I’ll give that a try. Cheers.
Since Covid brought the dental system to a halt, nearly all have had to close their books. I haven’t been able to get an appointment at my NhS practice yet so I can’t imagine then taking any new patients for some time yet.
I have indeed heard numbers of people heading back to previous home towns to see their old dentist so hang on to that connection until you know you have found a replacement. Its ridiculous I know, but it’s becoming common to head back to see friends and family and the dentist!
I go private and pay a monthly whack -£30 I think. Given an ultimatum, join and insurance scheme or find another dentist ....

I joined - and am being seen as an emerg - tomorrow 10 am -filling dropped out
^my NHS dental practice (three female dentists) have been working normally for many, many months. I had a check-up six weeks ago and another one seven months before that.
They are not taking any new NHS-only patients on, though.

Very interesting. :(
Have you tried these, Chrissa1?

Prodent, South Cliff Dental Group, 31 St Edmunds Road, Shirley, Southampton, SO16 4RF. 023 8078 7080.

Eastleigh Dental Care, South Cliff Dental Group, 4 Desborough Rd, Eastleigh, SO50 5NX. 023 8061 4776.

According to the NHS website, they're both currently accepting adult NHS patients (with that information having last been updated only a week ago).
Ahh that’s good of you Chris - hopefully that may help somewhat.
smow - are you home and in some comfort - sorry Chrissa for digressing
Hi JJ. so kind of you to ask. I’m home yes. Still in same pain, am on morphine for a few more days - as discharged with by hospital. Finding it v v hard to get any sleep in bed as in hospital at least I could tilt the bed somewhat to an angle that was marginally tolerable. Here at home no matter what I attempt to support myself with nothing really works x

Sorry for the late response, but I wanted to help you out. Finding an NHS dentist can be a bit tricky, especially when most of them require referrals for new patients. It can be frustrating when even your doctors can't assist you with this. However, don't lose hope just yet! While browsing online, I came across a website called https://www.silverdaledentalcenter.com/. They provide some useful information about dental services and may have resources to help you find a dentist. It's worth checking out and exploring the options they provide. They might have tips, recommendations, or even a directory of dentists accepting new NHS patients without referrals.
