I can't bend down now and have been recommended a large metal framed device @ around £25 but it seems too elaborate just to out on standard gents socks.
Any suggestions welcome.

The ambulatory nurse suggested I buy one of those cage things to help me put compression stockings on. It sounds like what you have posted about. I could see that it would work with patience and practice but it is quite high to put a foot in and with arthritis in my right hip, I couldn't get my foot in. I bought a blue plastic contraption, called an easy off/ easy on sock helper from Amazon for around £10 which works up to a point, I still have trouble getting the stocking on my bad side but it fits where it touches.
Squad, would that work for compression stockings, do you think?
roo.....yes it could be used, but compression stockings are really difficult to apply, whatever method you use.
Yes, squad, I've discovered that!
I use this one. Bought on Amazon for £8.49 with free delivery.

OH has a neat metal frame (not that large) called a 'Sockaid' from Urgo Medical. It means independence, and the surgery obtained it for him at no cost to us. It works beautifully on socks and compression stockings. It even gets his sock on his right leg which is in compression bandaging. Can highly recommend it.
You may find some device on line to help. If not search for some tall comfy slipper shoe that you do not need to wear socks with.
Coppit, this reminds me of the late Sir Jimmy Young who said the best advice he ever was given was from James Callaghan: Jim, always sit down to put on your socks.

I think of that most days whilst getting dressed ;)
