This Morning are currently focusing on menopause which affects millions of women. A couple of years ago I went to see my GP as I felt I was going through symptoms of the menopause in particular bad mood swings. I was told that HRT increases the risk of certain cancers and that I should use herbal remedies instead.

So what should I do? Are there different types of HRT which I should re-visit with my new GP (since moving house) or should I just go for homeopathic remedies and which is best?

It's a tough one, Tiggs. You could at least have a chat with new doctor to see if there something that might suit?
Other than that, you have to weigh up the pros & cons, i.e breast cancer. I might have died it a few years ago but my sister, who went on a low oestrogen one, still went on to have breast cancer after two years, and need a mastectomy. My doctor advised me after that not to go on it. I'm sure the antidepressants I'm on, help a lot with symptoms, especially hot flushes. Not everybody will want to try this route, but whatever works for you. Maybe try the homeopathic way.
Not easy. Best wishes x

Thanks all, will have a chat with my new GP.
The NHS website seems to disagree with the opinion you were given by your GP (unless, of course, there are particular factors that apply to you and not to most other women).

Quote:
"The benefits of HRT usually outweigh the risks for most women.

The risks are usually very small, and depend on the type of HRT you take, how long you take it and your own health risks.

Speak to a GP if you're thinking about starting HRT or you're already taking it, and you're worried about any risks".

I'm using women's HRT patches myself. (I know it seems odd, as I'm male, but it's a medical trial for the treatment of prostate cancer). From my own point of view, I see the reduced risk of osteoporosis that comes with using them as a positive thing and I've no real worries about any potential negative effects from them.

That's good to know, Chris.
There are different types of HRT. My GP gave me a pill-only type which didn’t help at all. In fact made things worse with heavy bleeding and night sweats.
I went to a gynaecologist on my work health insurance and he gave me a combination of pill and gel, which has been great.

I wouldn’t bother with homeopathy or herbal.

I used Vogel menopace with Evening Primrose. My sister used black chestnut
