However hard it might be to get in touch with your GP, you really ought to find a way to get to grips with the cause of your problem, rather than just trying to deal with the swelling itself.

To the best of my knowledge anyway, there are no diuretic drugs available without prescription. That only leaves 'natural' products, such as those sold by Holland & Barrett but I note that both of the products sold by that store state that they shouldn't be taken by people with diabetes (which, if I recall correctly, includes you).

ach Chris - I've only a wee bit of diabetes, one metformin a day
You asked about this last month, it really is a good time to seek a bit of advice.
Question Author
yes I know I did Mamy but then the swelling goes down and I don't want to bother doctor when they are normal again.
I could point out that that's their job, but it's your call.

I have to go in for blood tests which I neglected in September but may get them done soon this month and I will mention them (swelling) to the nurse.
Good idea.
"would it be ok for me to buy OTC water retention pills - I take one Metformin and one Anlopidine."

Yes if you want.
Your ankle swelling at night is almost certainly due to your Amlidopine. If they don't bother you then no big deal.

Don't rush headlong into diuretics.

One of the most common side effects of amlodipine is swollen ankles. Read the information leaflet that comes with them.
Diabetes is like being pregnant - you either are diabetic/pregnant or you aren't.
If anything says it is not suitable for diabetics that includes you, JJ
raise the foot end of your mattress by stuffing something underneath it so your legs are raised while you sleep, it might help with the swelling.
I like you take Metformin and Amlodipine and also suffered swollen ankles. Discussed it with the Practice Nurse and changed the Amlodipine script to a different script. Result is now no swollen ankles.
I'd suggest you continue trying to get an appointment either with your GP or your Practice Nurse.
Would also suggest that you do not seek OTC remedies.

funny you saying Slack Alice - I was on 10mg of Amlopidine (dont have the prescription box here beside me) and I never noticed anything different until nurse rang me and asked me did I noticed that she had highered the dose I think to 20mg - so perhaps that's it. I will mention when I get some mail back from them re the blood tests.
