If I were to ask the other guard which door leads to freedom,
what would s/he say?
^ Explanation: If you ask the liar, s/he will lie about what the truth-teller would say, and will point you to the door that leads to death. The truth teller would tell the truth that the liar would point to the door to death. So, both guards would point you towards the door to death, and so you take the other one
I thought there were four guards.
I didn't read it properly. Mea culpa
Four guards and four exists is not the usual scenario for this puzzle.
Is he asking the question to only one guard or to all 4 at once?
Think it should perhaps be two exits and two guards. Happy to be wrong.
Ask any guard to instruct another guard who would always answer in the same way as him to point out which exit to take. A truth-telling guard would point to the other truth teller. A lying guard would also point to one of the truth tellers. Take the exit pointed to.
