My two week old grandson as been constipated for three days and in pain with it.
The chemist as said she cant give him anything till he's a month old.
Is there anything we could try to ease his discomfort?
Thankyou x
Is the baby bottle or breast fed. If breast fed is the mom drinking enough fluids? Can she give the baby some boiled water in a bottle or spoon or medicine dropper. What do you mean by constipated. Hard stools difficult to pass or not pooing at all or just a little. With breast fed baby the moms diet plays a big part. With the hot weather the baby could be a little dehydrated and not enough liquid getting into stool. Is the baby trying to poo and cannot. If it is not pooing at all contact gp
Has she tried massaging and tummy and lower back, and exercise by raising the knees to the tummy several times. A warm bath may also help but really she should phone 111. Three days is too long.
Apart from obviously taking the medical advice as suggested here I recall my granddaughter in great distress when she was a little tot. We were advised to give her fresh orange juice.
Two weeks is too young for orange juice. Boiled water with a little brown sugar does work. If breast feeding is the mom constipated. If bottle feeding is she using the right quantity of powder and water, it is easy to make a mistake
Going three days without a poo at two weeks old isn’t unusual.
Our (now eight months old) grandson, while he was being breast and bottle fed, used to go up to four days without a poo.
First time we babysat he saved one up for us and unloaded it half an hour after the parents went out.
Personally I don’t think there’s any need for a&e, a word with the midwife or health visitor would reassure everyone though.
I know naomi, we’ve all given our opinions here which is all we can do but ultimately jh must do what they feel is best.
Certainly my first port of call would be the midwife or health visitor, as I’ve said. They’re usually on the end of the phone for advice about babies this young.
Purely my opinion.
From the description that you have given, this is no big deal and is not uncommon in babies to go 5 days without pooing.
I agree with the post of vagus above and might suggest that the bsny should be given warm water between feeds.
