The government may suggest you make your own, They are just as (in)effective unless you go for an N95 or FFP3 respirator

This article is relevant although it seems to reflect the WHO and government /scientists view that they should be reserved for medical staff and others in exceptional circumstances, and the disadvantages may not necessarily outweigh the advantages

Masks ( masks help) stop the spread, as I've been saying for weeks, and got shot down many times for saying I was already making mine, and have done.
I have made my own, two layers of a tight weave cotton with a fibre interlining. They can be not washed, then soaked in citric acid solution and dried. Might experiment with waterproofing spray on the outer surface. Different colours and designs. My feeling is if they don't let light through they should be better than nothing
Hot washed
I'm surprised someone hasn't produced some designer brands featuring logos.
I wonder if they are becoming a bout of a fashion statement (or a way of legally disguising identity). I've noticed that one of the groups of young men that use the roads as race tracks wear facemasks while driving. I have also noticed that a couple of places where groups meet up and scatter empty N₂O cannisters are now also littered with discarded masks. I'm not sure what that's about. Does it improve the sensation if you inhale with a mask over your face? I'm a bit out of touch
My daughter is already on it and made some for relatives about 6 weeks ago, just after she got laid off at work. They had a children's type of print and are very well finished off. As soon as others seen them the orders started. It has started to run away with itself now, as every time someone buys one, they are straight back wanting more for the rest of the family .. for every day of the week !

Same old story .. getting supplies of material is proving difficult.

You don't need the proper medical masks that the professionals wear, just something to cover your nose and mouth. Be sure to throw away afterwards and don't touch the mask whilst wearing. Throw away after use and wash your hand. If you use a scarf or bandana, again don't touch it and wash it and your hand straight away when you get home.

I think this is where I got mine

Just be aware that cheap masks, bandanas, scarves can help but are far from foolproof.
