Went to a lovely hotel on Monday.... Whilst in the steam sauna decided to do some deep breathing. About half hour later my throat was hurting. Since yesterday have a stinking cold and cough. Coincidence? Or from the sauna?

I doubt that you caught your cold from the sauna itself. However it's possible that you already had a very mild cold (so that you hardly noticed it, if at all) and that the warm, moist air provided then it with ideal conditions to develop fully.
I am going to slightly disagree with Buenchico.... If the hygiene in the sauna isn't good, you may have picked up the virus there, although I don't think that the rough throat was caused by the cold virus because 30 minutes is a bit quick.
I used to use a stream inhaler when I had a cold in order to try to clear my nose. Almost inevitably transferred the cold to the chest. Still, used to think it had pushed matters on so was nearer the end. No idea if that was really so.
Started a decorating job on an empty property just before Christmas. When I entered the house it was like an oven, all rads turned up full. Obviously not good conditions for wallpapering but it was a rather cold day. So I turned all rads off upstairs, leaving the downstairs ones on to keep some semblance of warmth in there. That first evening, I began to develop a sore throat. The day after, a bit of a dry chesty cough. The day after that, the odd sneeze. The sore throat has gone, the chesty cough less troublesome but I now have the runny nose to accompany the sneezing. Obviously plumbers, plasterers and joiners had been in before me and maybe one of them left a 'bug' behind which thrived in the heat and just lay in wait for it's next victim.
It always seems to me that a cold bug thrives, or starts, the moment you start using the central heating at home.
A virus can be picked up from anything you touch; a door handle, or any part of the sauna equipment. The handles of supermarket trolleys are particularly good places to pick up viruses.

Almost impossible to avoid, other than wearing gloves & keep washing your hands.

I agree with that, Teacake.
