What I believe is my gastrocnemius muscle, inside lower leg muscle, is exceedingly tender to touch from just below my know a few inches above my ankle. It causes no other pain or discomfort at any time other when brushed against or touched. The feeling is similar to a painful bruise but there is no sign of bruising or inflammation. Over a week ago I had to stop myself from falling as I stepped back off a work platform (2 ft high) and lost balance which made it feel as if I had given myself a burn down my leg.
What could be the cause and is there anything I should be doing to assist in a quicker recovery? Thank you.

Sounds like a strain , is the area reddened or hot?
Some info here, probably more in depth than you
need but may help you decide your next move.

I tore this muscle a few years ago and had to get physiotherapy treatment. They used an ultrasound.

I can't remember much apart from the pain, it was really bad. I was walking to work and heard a bang and pain. I thought that I had been shot.

You could go to your GP or a private physiotherapist.
Your diagnosis seems quite correct.
I would use ibuprofen or Voltarol cream three times a day, which should sort this muscle problem.
