My front tooth seems to be going a little dark....had root canal treatment on it a while ago. is there any way to get it a better colour other than expensive dental treatment?

When you get the root removed the tooth does go dark. That happened to me but unfortunately dentist also put a mercury filling at the back of it so when I smiled (not too often LOL) people could see a blackness. I just got used to it but now I have implants on those 4 front teeth - all got the roots removed (blackened). See a dentist for advice.
When you have a root canal, the tooth dies, as all the nerves are removed.
This usually results in the tooth changing colour - sometimes a darker shade.

It is possible to whiten the tooth:

...... best to speak to your dentist to see what options are open to you :)
Could you get a dental veneer done!
tooth whitening
the darkness is that there is a leak of haemoglobin into the tooth and the iron darkens

cost of treatment depends on how you feel
Also after some time like a good bit later - as Giz has said the tooth has died so becomes weaker
