I decided to stay at home today and let other friends go in and one of my friends phoned in a state to say that she had just gone in to visit and the medics were rushed in alarms were going and the blinds and door were closed. She heard the doctor say something about swallowing and arteries and he had to go for an emergency CT scan. My friend visiting waited until the nurse said to leave as he might be a while while having this scan. When the door was closed she also heard them saying that they were having to put pressure on something and he groaned a lot.
As well as pancreatic cancer and secondaries in the lung it is suspected he has something suspicious in his oesophagus they said it was a blockage of some kind as he cant eat. He is extremely emaciated. I dont know what kind of crisis this was but it sounded bad. I am not his next of kin but he has asked me along with his next of kin and wife to be there when he dies which I have agreed to I just hope that he doesnt die on his own that is what I am most scared of.

I thought it might be a spontaneous pneumothorax or a PE
Why don't you telephone the ward and ask if you could visit Gordie ?
Please be reassured that you can't guarantee to be there at the precise moment, all you can do is try to honour your promise. If things are really bad he will be heavily sedated and won't be too aware of who is there.

I have and they have said it is not advisable at the moment that is all they said
PEs are common whilst on chemotherapy but to me he doesn't sound like he'd be in any fit state to undergo cytotoxic therapy.

I'm really sorry but the outlook is rather bleak from where I'm standing. I hope they manage to make him as comfortable as possible

xx
Hospitals can be a bit funny with the presence of non-family, but also they may consider his current treatment might be very harrowing for a friend or relative to watch.

Nevertheless I hope you succeed with your kind and compassionate quest, but if not take comfort from Mamyalynne's wise words.
Horrible reading this. ABers of some years know I have a brain tumour that impacts on my life but is no big deal in the scheme of things.

However it struck home, as for the last three months I have had eating problems too. Told on one hospital admission I had a hiatus hernia, but since been told it's cancer of the oeseophagus.

Not eaten anything solid in two months, or up until yesterday, water for six days. Currently in hospital getting rehydrated and still waiting on exploratory tests to determine treatment.

I really feel for your friend and you.
Oh Postdog I'm so sorry I had no idea. Hope everything goes well and you're back home soon and feeling better x
Postdog, I didn't know of your recent developments - I do hope there is something they can do.x
Postdog, I'm so sorry to hear you feel so ill, maybe B&S in AB not the place for you just now . good luck with your treatment, best wishes .
Actually, though I don't contribute much, I tend to look in every day or so, just looking at latest posts, which is how I saw this one. Even though I have problems, I find it actually helps at times to experience others problems, or possibly help them. It's what Answerbank is about really.
So sad for you all gordie. Hope your friend is made as comfortable as can be.x

Hope they can sort some good treatment out for you Postdog.x

has he a history of drinking? it sounds like oesophageal varices.
Postdog, sorry to hear of your troubles, hope u feel better soon
