well anybody I know who got the hip done through NHS - it was 2 years. Sorry
What they can do is go to the patient advice and liaison service of the hospital where they were assessed and ask what the waiting time is and how it compares to the NICE guideline.
Go here:
https://www.nhs.uk/service-search/Hospital/LocationSearch/7/Procedures?procedure=Hip%20replacement
Enter your friend's postcode and click 'Search'. That will then show all of the hospital's in his/her area and the time between referral and treatment.

For example, around here the waiting times (for 9 out out of 10) patients vary between 17 weeks and 31 weeks:

[NB: When I first tried to use that search facility it keep telling me that it couldn't find 'hip replacement'. I got around it by selecting a different treatment (angioplasty) from the list of available treatments and then, after viewing those results, searching again for 'hip replacement'. So, if your initial search fails, you could try the same thing]
I had my pre op assessment last August and operation was done early May - four weeks ago. I was on crutches for over a year waiting.
Things might be better now as local hospital was cancelling virtually all operations over the winter.
Hope your friend has better luck.
Think it may depend very much on where you live. From diagnosis to actual op I waited for 6 months. Had a second hip replacement 6 months later.
mine was pretty quick after been treated for a back problem for 8 years(in awful pain ) until they discovered I had deformed hips .
I agree maggiebee.
We seem to wait far longer here in the SW.
Mine was replacing a replacement. So 5 hour operation and longer recovery than first time around.
Mine was 16 weeks but that was when the.the nhs had an 18 week target from referral to treatment. That was for a replacement though and you don't mention if that's the op you mean
I went on a waiting list for a cancellation and could have had it done the next day! As is was I waited about two weeks. It did, however, take ages to get a diagnosis and I was in agony.
It really depends on the nature of the surgery. Total hip replacement, bipolar hemiarthroplasty or DHS?? If the patient previously had, say, intra-articular steriod injections earlier on in the pathway, then they have had their first definitive treatment which has to happen within 18 weeks of the Consultant receiving the original referral.

If surgery is not the first line of treatment for the same condition, there's really no enforceable time limit.

It depends on the popularity of your surgeon, where you live, and other factors. I used to work for two Orthopaedic Surgeons. One had a waiting list of 5 weeks, the other 33 weeks.

If you keep ringing the Secretary and make a nuisance of yourself as politely as you can, your waiting time MIGHT be expedited.
First of all make it clear you will take a short notice cancellation.
If your consultant has a long list ask for a switch to another even if it is out of your area. Do a bit of research as well as it might be worth waiting longer for a surgeon with a better reputation.
