I have recently been to a care home in Scotland the majority of the residents were in a sad state surely when the quality of life has gone it’s time to let them go,drooping on a chair and drooling from the mouth no idea of what is going on what kind of way is that to treat our elderly

No way do I want to end my days a drooling peeing burden - or knowing that the pain is never going away, or someone has to wipe by backside till I finally can't breathe or move - I hope I still have enough nous to take the decision when its time to go. Wouldn't do it to a dog, so wouldn't want it happen to me.

I don't think one can generalise, for the individually who chooses to end their life it shouldn't be as difficult as it is now.

" it’s time to let them go"

Do you mean open the doors of the care home and "let them go" OR do you mean not feed them or give them fluids any more?

Neither seems practicable...........
If they request release it should be taken seriously. But all reasonable should be done to make their life of value to them first.
I do have some sympathy with the idea of euthanasia for humans. However, it has to be a personal decision. I do not think we can impose our views on others.

And you really do not know what sort of life these elderly people have unless you are with them 24/7. My grandfather has really bad days where he doesnt know who he is and has no idea what is going on. However, he also has really good days when he recognises his family, enjoys singing songs to my mother's organ playing, enjoys his garden, goes out for lunch.

I would hate for someone else to make a decision on my life based on a short snapshot of time.
The fault is the quality of care, if stimulating activities take place and staff interact appropriately with them they might not be anywhere near as bad. Certainly would not use a home like that for one of my relatives.
Barmaid.
Euthanasia is not "letting then go" as described by the OPer, but is "killing them".

Something quite different.

I am in favor of euthanasia in general. But there needs to be a huge amount of care taken the people are not being influenced by family members who want them out of the way so they can grab 'Their Inheritance'.
You don't have to look far on AB to find posts about money grabbing relatives who can hardly wait for a relative to die before grabbing as much of their cash as they can get their greedy hands on. Or trying to change or overturn a will to grab even more.
As I stroll the streets of an evening I'm minded to support any call for youthanasia.
//Or trying to change or overturn a will to grab even more. //

For which I am eternally grateful.
Douglas - clever.
Stock answer number 146: Yes I can see your point but it will lead to kids marching granny up to death R us to nick the house. Next.
I suppose, like organ donation, it's something you can make clear while you still have all your faculties.
yes but jordy is talking about bumping off the members of a care home for not playing volleyball.
Isn't the Isle of Man government going to be like Switzerland and pass a law through their Parliament
to allow assisted suicide
I could think of a person or two I would like to do this to!!
You "have recently been to" a care home and made a judgement about the quality of life of the people you saw there. i don't think you can make that judgement just from "recently being to a care home". You don't know how the people there feel in themselves, you only know what you think you saw, and that is coloured by your own emotional response to what you saw. Maybe the people you saw are entirely contented. You cannot, on the bases of a single visit, reach a judgement about whether they should live or not.
Exactly cassa. Jordy, you are judging them from your own perspective, not from theirs. You might feel very differently in that situation yourself.
