My dr suspects that I am suffering from this and has taken a whole heap of bloods to confirm it.
Does anyone know the long term effect of malnutrition and what the treatment is.
TBH I was a bit shocked as I kinda assumed this was something the people suffering in a famine area got.

Apparently, malnutrition is not uncommon after bariatric surgery. It makes sense that the body can't absorb as many nutrients as it needs. Have you been prescribed any supplements? https://www.verywell.com/malnutrition-after-gastric-bypass-surgery-3156876

I wonder if this diagnosis even minor is not uncommon following your surgery. Do you see a dietician on a regular basis ? I was discharged from hospital ( post surgery ) with malnutrition . It was high calorie drinks or readmission .

I haven't seem my nurse for 6 weeks - which is a short time compared to the NHS patients - but bloods are not taken frequently - the only reason this came to light was because I have suffered a lot of dizzy spells and went to the GP for advice.
blurdy ell, Islay. :-(

Maybe your body just isn't absorbing the nutrients properly?
Hi! Islay.

Malnutrition is a wide term used loosely by many people, but in your case it may well indicate the possibility of certain vitamins e.g B12, or Vitamins,or indeed certain trace elements. Anaemia is another side effect.

Don't get too hung up on this Islay as further test may give a clue and replacement therapy solving your problems.
P.S//remember, that your symptoms may well have nothing to do with your bariatric surgery.

Lol me get hung up - never!!!
What it has done is made me concentrate on the food I am putting in me and highlighted that yesterday I consumed 850 cals but burned 1600!
Oh Islay, I know you must have had some shock when Dr's told you about the malnutrition but would you believe I had it about 4 years ago, I don't know how it happened but I remember my public health nurse (as I live alone) came in daily to check my eating and what could be put in and taken out of my diet, after a few weeks I had a much better blood reading, I was shocked and knowing me I wasn't gonna tell my family, they'd think it was a late april fool joke I was so shocked, I was getting too many infections and not really eating well and what I was eating was just something quick as i was too tired and feeling like pulled through the ringer, that's how my malnutrition was detected, an underlying problem

ducksie - it was a shock - I don't know if it is down to my surgery or something else - Dr Google gives a variety of answers!
Islay, you have been very naughty re your diet / exercise ?? :-)
Question Author
I am supposed to aim for a 1000 cals a day but that is very difficult I even had a milky coffee to add more. Believe it or not that calorie burn was just from walking 6k - my weight is still obese so I burn more simply walking.
I am out on the gin tonight - so will get more calories that way lol
Excellent idea, drink gin.

I may go and buy wine - if only to stave off malnutrition. :)

Seriously though Islay as others and our esteemed consultant have said, try not to worry. and stay away from Dr Google. I have heard of this in the elderly (I am not being offensive about your age) and it is remedied with supplements.

Have you tried Fortisip or Complan products? Complan isn’t just about flavoured shakes they also do a protein additive that can be added to soup and is fortified with vitamins and minerals.
Question Author
spath, considering my consultant and nurse have advised me to keep track of my calories - I will continue to do so - thank you for your input.

Barmaid - if I take the gin with fruit juice - thats gotta be better for me right?
spath is quite correct........calories have little or no relevance to this thread.

I wonder if it's anything to do with the meds you're taking?
