Removing A Kidney Stone

My husband has just been diagnosed as having a kidney stone. He has been told that he will need an operation to remove it as it is too large to have the laser treatment. I know this may seem quite harsh but we have booked to go away in May and that is the approximate date he is due to have the operation. Could somebody let us know what the operation entails ,what the recovery time is and how mobile will he be. I know it is impossible to have accurate answers but we would like to have some idea before we decide to cancel our plans.

If "open" surgery = 5 - 10 days in hospital and 4-6 weeks recovery

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), percutaneous nephrolithotripsy, and ureteroscopy to remove kidney stones has nearly eliminated the need for open surgery to remove them.

Treatment = 1 - 2 hours
Recovery = A few Days

Whatever you do don't cancel your holiday yet hardy. I don't know which area you live in but down here on the south coast my daughter has waited 21 months for her operation. In the last 6 months she has had 2 pre-ops and 4 cancellations. She is now booked for 2 weeks time but we'll believe it when we see it. I hope you have better luck than my daughter.

i have had ureteroscopy several times. Two of the times, the stone was too big/too much swelling to remove, and i had to have a nephrostomy for a six week period to allow the swelling to go down (this is a tube that goes directly into the kidney from your back and drains the wee into a bag) i would not have wanted to go away while i had that in

erm I dont want to be Mr Rude but why are you asking us ( sundry or motley collectyion of walk-ins and bozos ) and not your booking surgeon

the choices that he will guide you thro' and the critierion should NOT be - "want to go on hooiday" - are open and closed. AS you have read, open is longer and closed shorter - possibly even down to 24h

You have even implied correctly that it is down to the size of the stone. ask the one who is doing it
