I am having my toenail removed permanently on wednesday and feeling edgy I need a premed. Before going to get a filling I usually take 10mg lorezapam over 12 hours and I am completely out of it for hours and hours afterwards. Mum being a trained nurse of over 50 years experience has told me that this lorezapam is a lot of nonesense and to take 20mg of diazepam. I am quite chubby and a regular user. I usually take 5mg, most 7.5mg at a time 3 or 4 times a week for the last 21 years. So 5mg would not touch it. Is 20mg not a massive dose like an OD? How would it make me feel

No.
It all depends on your tolerance and body weight - an 8 stone woman with no previous exposure would probably be turned into a sleepy zombie, but a 20 stone bloke who is already used to the drug would probably just be very relaxed - possibly with a bit of a hangover headache 4 or 5 hours later.
The Inchem website is a useful source of information. It brings together data from internationally-respected bodies, including the World Health Organisation.

It says that up to 20mg or oral diazepam (as a single dose) can be given to adults for the purpose of premedication or sedation in surgery or dentistry. So it would seem that such a dose isn't going to kill you. However, given that up to 30mg in a single dose can be given as an hypnotic, 20mg is probably likely to make you a bit woozy.

However I'd still advise checking with a pharmacist before taking the drug.

No. Wouldn't be good if you had to take it long term, but you're talking of a one-off. You'll be woozy, which is probably good.
Is there any chance you'll be given sedation before the procedure? You should bear that in mind.

No they dont give sedation before it. If you want to have sedation you have to take your own before it. As some people dont have or need any.
I thought the diazepam was the sedation, pasta. The OP doesn't need more than that.
gordie.....I think that you are a type 2 diabetic, but if not then ignore my comments.
I agree with the others that 20 mgms of Diazepam is no big deal as a one off, however it may raise your blood sugar levels but don't panic they will be back to normal within a day or so.

great thanks sqad I appreciate that. The only thing I am anxious about is the pain of the inital injection in the foot is supposed to be really painful
The initial injection will "sting" and this may continue for about a minute.....not bad pain, but uncomfortable.
On the other side of the coin, you could ask them to remove the toenail without an anaesthetic .;-)

lol fair paint sqad !!

i meant point. I keep on putting my toe in it with the typing, pun intended !!
Well gordie...the only "real" painful bit only lasts for about 10-15 secs. then it just reverts back to " painful" for about a minute.
The key to this gordie is to try and let you body go all "loose" and in your mind tell them to "do what they want" Relaxation, looseness are both the key features.
Take sqad's and you'll only feel a small prick...
Like I said on your other thread, and as Sqad says, it stings but only very briefly. I was given the chance to just lie down and chill out (no sedation, just relaxing) and not see anything but I watched it all. I'm not really squeamish though.

One tip I've always found good for relaxing during an uncomfortable medical procedure (it was a lady thing when I had it recommended!) is to drop your jaw, you tend to tense it up when you are tense and it does actually help.

thanks eve yes that is really true I quite often have a clenched jaw I will try that tomorrow thanks
