I have the same, ILM, except it's my left hip. The pain is excruciating and only slowly goes away when I lie on my back.
I put it down to lying asleep, on my right side with my left leg bent in a foetal position. The hip joint just seems to seize up. It's awful and I sympathies with you.
My new bed didn't help either. :-(
Highly suspicious of "Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome"....Google it for more information.
Inflammation of tendons and muscles around the top of the thigh...sometimes called Trochanteric bursitis.
Take ibuprofen 400mgms when and if necessary up to every 4 hours.
Not a big deal, but if it persists for more than 2-3 weeks see you GP.
I get Trochanteric bursitis, the pain is awful. A really nasty burning pain, like loads of hot needles, for me and it covers quite a large area.

I'm not allowed ibuprofen (sorry Sqad!) or other such anti-inflammatories though as they affects my kidneys but I had steroid injections in both sides some years ago, guided by ultrasound, which were fantastic! I'd had it for quite some time by then though.

It came back eventually. Had another steroid injection in the worse side, which hasn't been as effective, but it wasn't an ultrasound guided one. I try and avoid being in a position which aggravates it as much as possible. Sometimes even light knicker elastic will set it off. I find it worse lying on the sofa than in bed but I have got a really thick soft mattress topper which maybe helps.
Squad, mine has been like this for months. Is it time to see the GP then?
I'm not the only one with thigh pains then :-)
I suspect there are many possible causes though.
I used to have it, just in one thigh; a memory pad over the mattress has reduced it by about 80% to just the occasional niggle. (That was after getting a new bed and finding it didn't help.)
Tilly....if the pain killers are working, then press on as it is a troublesome condition to resolve. However, if the painkillers are not doing their job, then as Eve has indicated a steroid injection may well be the answer.
Sqad, I don't take painkillers. I just put up with it. Do you suggest that two Ibuprofen each night, before bed, may help?
A couple of exercises and how to cope mentioned here too - it's quite common.

Thanks guys for answers!!! Googled GTPS and there are many similarities. Ive had it for months. I will try the recommended exercises, ibuprofen and ice packs. If no improvement I will see my GP.
Sounds exactly like mine...ended up needing a new hip!!

I agree cupotee2 sounds very like hip replacement needed.
i have suffered for years with thigh pain at night and last year i finally went to my gp as the pain was so bad,an ultrasound revealed bursitis and i had a steroid injection in jan and it has really helped to relieve the pain.
Funnily enough, I don't get any pain in my hip during that day. I can walk for miles, no problems. I go to bed and within four hours, it starts!
I suffered from hip pain for a while, and bought a 5 cms Deep Double Bed "Microlite" Microfibre Mattress Topper, fabulous and like sleeping on a cloud. I also started taking Turmeric capsules after a friend who also had the same problem told me that she had found them to be of great benefit. They seem to be working for me as well, after 2 weeks I noticed a distinct difference.
