Years ago when I was a grave digger, I had to exhume a body, well just a skeleton really, to enable me to dig the grave deeper for a second burial, this was illegal but fairly common practice. The bones were all put together in a bin bag and hidden under some soil to be placed back in the grave after the spouse had been interred the next day.

When I went back to place the bones back in the grave, the skull had disappeared!

I had a few sleepless nights I can tell you!!

On another occasion, they were lowering the coffin into the grave when suddenly the foot end of the coffin became wedged, the hole was too small at one end and the poor deceased person was lowered into the grave almost stood on his/her head, as it had entered the grave we were not permitted to remove the coffin without home office permission. After the burial I had to jump up and down on the coffin to get it below ground level, hoping that no one saw me! Really not a good situation to be in.

And it's haunted you ever since ?
Think what the skull thought of you, ratter..... "I think I'm going to crap myself over this! Though, come to think of it, I don't have a butt."
Ah, so that's the origin of the expression ' a grave error of judgement'. :)
did you check to see if any group were putting on hamlet .
some pesky fox probably nicked it to get his own back on humanity
Dreadful story Ratter, my friend !

What we have to do to earn a crust....some of us have to work for Amazon ......EEEEEK !
not my mistake..the boss left the Great Seal of Scotland out of the safe..priceless beyond words....I used it in the day I wrote the royal parchments...safe was on a timer and could not be opened again 'till Monday morning..so I had to take it home with me for the weekend....imagine if that had gone missing..to the tower !!!! boss was bricking it as he remembered he'd not put it back and nearly kissed me when I got in early to replace it before folks were in..saved his bacon !
It wasn't really a drastic outcome...but it could have been.

I lived a mile out of town by this time and we had an hour for lunch. It was when mum really needed care a lot but I was still working so I'd occasionally Taxi it up and back. I'd booked a taxi for 1.45 to get me back to work for 2...the taxi never appeared. So while I was on the phone to the taxi company my mum took it upon herself to call work to let them know what was happening and why I wasn't there.

Got back in to work to be greeted by my boss who followed me from the door to the back space chanting 'you work for this company not your mum, you should have called not your mum' I should point out there was a family in he shop at the time but he kept going on and on. And he was also very rude to my mum on the phone...I wanted all of about a minute before tearing him a new one telling him that my mum took it upon herself to alert them to the fact that I was going to be late while I was trying to find out what had happened and what would he have preferred me being late and not knowing or me being late and being aware. I also told him if he EVER spoke to my mum or myself in that tone again it would have been the last thing he ever did.

He looked like a fish out of water and I stormed off and locked myself in the slipper room until my colleague came looking for slippers. My boss hated confrontation.

I survived another year of employment where he was very nice to me the whole time.
so the legality of digging up someone didnt bother you, but you wouldn't take the coffin out, adjust it then put it back?
Bag of bones?
Wernt they in a coffin?
I'd call in the Detection Club to find the skull, except they probably took it in the first place

Not in the same context as earlier postings.
I went to the loo at work. Old fashioned pull chain cistern. As I raised from the seat I lifted my hand to pull the chain. As I pulled the chain the cistern came away from the wall, hitting me on the head and shoulders. I was a bit dazed, bruised and hurt. When I reported it I had to record it in the accident book.
I suppose if it had happened now I could have sued for thousands, but it was unheard of in the seventies.
My first proper job working in a haberdashers, they soon discovered my artistic tendencies so I was given the job of window dresser for the main window.

As usual, one Monday morning I dressed the back wall of the display and stepped back to check my handiwork before moving on to the rest - heard a crack and thought I had stood on the scissors or something.

To my horror I spun round and the entire window had cracked top to bottom.
I've posted before about how I managed to lose a train.

It was definitely there on Platform 1 when the line was temporarily closed and I had to direct passengers to the replacement buses. When the line reopened later on I put out a PA announcement directing passengers to use the train on Platform 1 - but it had vanished!

(I'd acidentally sent it back empty to the depot, 45 miles away, several hours earlier and, up until then, nobody had noticed my gaff!)
When teaching a group of youngsters who had never been in the countryside I organised a treasure hunt with clues concerning the flowers and trees we had learned about earlier
Result a tearful fifteen year old 6 foot lad telling me that somebody had picked the fu..ing foxglove

What is the slipper room, QoM? We're you working in a shoe shop, or was it a bit more dodgy? ;)
I once wasted three months studying really bizarre behaviour of the stuff I was working on, before I realised I'd got a sign wrong. It took me about two hours to finish the rest of it.

t ones there lol, loved it. so im not the only one!

bedknobs. "so the legality of digging up someone didnt bother you, but you wouldn't take the coffin out, adjust it then put it back?" It was very easy to dig through bones whilst 4ft down a hole. dragging a full coffin out of a hole would have been almost impossible by myself, and imagine what would have happened if a relative had returned to the grave as they sometimes do.

Nailit. "Bag of bones?" Yes I put them in a bin bag to remove them.
"Wernt they in a coffin?" yes they were, but many years before I came across them, many coffins quickly rot, depending on the type of wood and the type of ground, wet ground and cheap wood means a coffin will rot in a few years.
