I've just been informed by my surgery that my diabetes team have been in touch to get me on Folic Acid 5mg once per day. I'm not trying for a baby yet as I need to sort my sugars out first.

Is there any other reason why they want me on it or are they getting me ready for the future.

I'm a bit taken aback though about this too - totally came out of left field.

I take folic acid for pernicious anaemia.
Question Author
I didn't know that it could be used for Anaemia Eccles.

I asked why and they said everything was clear and it's because I mentioned I wanted to plan starting a family.
Ermm, haven't you just answered your own question???
Question Author
Possibly BUT I'm not ready as my diabetes is far from ready.

As a diabetic we need to plan things carefully and I'm no where near ready yet and they said that themselves - so this is a bit odd in my opinion.
Well, they're obviously looking after you, QoM. Good for the diabetes team!

I know Tilly, just didn't think it would be this soon or at least without talking to me about it first.
They are a great team though I can fault them really.
There is an increase in birth defects with patients wit diabetes and this increase can be ameliorated by such patients taking folic acid.

\\\\or are they getting me ready for the future. \\\

You have got it in one.......;-)

5mg is a lot higher than the usual 400mcg you'd tell a women to take when she's planning a pregnancy.
Question Author
I knew that there are many risks that's why I want to be in tip top control of my sugars.
I just wanted to be sure they weren't giving it to me for any other reason. Thank you Sqad.

I take it it's ok to take with Omeprazole/Mebeverine?

I know NoM - it's something to do with the Diabetes, never really been sure why but guess it's something I'm now going to have to get my head around.
NoMercy....good point. I think Qof M meant 500mcgms.
\\\I take it it's ok to take with Omeprazole/Mebeverine?\\\

Fine.
Question Author
I wish I did mean 500mcg - they definitely said 5mg. I've been told before that diabetics are given a much higher dose than that of a normal lady. I'll double check when I go collect it tomorrow.

That's ok - ta Sqad
Ooops! sorry.

5 mgms IS the correct dose.
Question Author
It's ok Sqad :)

Can I just ask why I need more than that of a normal non-diabetic female?
No idea Qof M........but studies have shown that you do.
Question Author
Thank you :) was just curious but I accept that I have a lot going against me and I want to be healthy and have a healthy child.
It might be because you're on systemic medication, QoM?
Question Author
It could be - but I'll just go with the flow NoM. its just a bit of a shock that things are becoming real a bit quicker than what I imagined.
Do what you want to do, QoM.

Don't be pressurised.
It's folic acid, not arsenic, I feel you are overthinking this a tad.
