Hello all,

Just want to know if any of you are giving up smoking at the moment, or if you have given up previously. I haven't smoked since Saturday, not long I know, but I'm using an inhaler to help with my cravings. Have any of you used this before and know if it is successful?

I gave up 18 months ago using patches (40+ a day roll ups)
Problem is, i've put on 4 stone and i seem to drink more beer !!!

Good luck...hope it goes well
well done!! i smoke and cant give up as i really enjoy a smoke especially in a morning with a coffee..i have tried to give up but never succeeded..i had one of those inhalers but it made me cough!
i gave up 1 year ago, i didnt use anything to help me give up, but when i wanted something to do with my hands i would paint my nails, or draw (not very good) pictures! i found that just keeping my hands busy was the best thing for me.

I gave up for a year and a half when i became pregnant, and once i'd stopped breast feeding i statred again!

i gave up yesterday by cold turkey (insert joke here). I'm always giving up and its quite easy really. Remember, after 3 days you have no nicotine in your body; from then on the cravings are only in your mind; cravings don't hurt. Within three weeks you should be totally ok with not smoking.

Well done for stopping

thanks for all your replies, I am also worried about putting on weight. Soooooooo many things to think about when you give up smoking.

A fag and a cup of tea in the morning will be missed but i'm doing ok still, (had one drag of a fag today and felt like i had let myself down) but i'm very determined.

Im aiming for the 3 week mark, yey bring it on...

Well done for having the determination to quit!

I have recently watched a relative die a very unpleasant death as a result of lung cancer caused by smoking.  Anybody who could have seen the suffering involved would be convinced, without doubt, that quitting smoking is the right thing to do.

Take a day (or an hour) at a time. Perhaps chew a raw carrot stick or slice of apple every time you feel tempted.  They don't have as many calories as sweets and that may help offset any weight increase.  Good Luck.

My wife's father has just died, the major cause of which was his lifetime of smoking.

My ex-wife died in January aged only 53, of heart failure brought on by smoking.

Give up. No decision really.

It is a stupid, expensive, unsocialable habit that one day will be banned completely I hope.

Go for it!!  This is my day 23 of not smoking!!  Total cold turkey, initially caused by fear of weird chest pains.  I finally realised that I couldn't hope to be totally unaffected by this disgusting habit.  After the first three days, the pain had stopped and now I don't even think about fags.  I've been going out for long walks after work to get some clean fresh air in my battered lungs.  Try reading Allen Carr's book "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" - it really helps.  This guy used to smoke 100 a day so he knows what he's talking about.  He also has the best record for getting people to stop.  Best of luck, I'm sure you can do it!!
