I am having 14 teeth removed in January and as you can imagine I am more than a little apprehensive.

I am having a full upper denture and a partial lower denture made/fitted. Does anyone have any experience or advice to offer regarding going through the process?

Its not so much having the teeth removed that I am worried about asthat is being done with sedation, I am more concerned about how I will adapt to wearing dentures, so any tips, advice or guidance will be appreciated.

Please respect the fact that I am apprehensive so any horror stories or tales of woe will not really help.

They will take a bit of getting used to, but you'll be fine once you get used to them.

When you think about the millions of people who have dentures, they can't be so bad.

Use some Fixodent or Polygrip if you need some extra confidence, but if they are a good fit, you might not need them.
Some advice I truly mean - when you get them as Chrissa says you may need some adhesive - they gave you that bit of confidence.

Next give yourself a bit of time to get used to them. Good luck Hetty
Hi Hettster
I have the same as you - full top denture and a partial lower denture. The only advice I would give is to make sure that both dentures are a perfect fit, not only when wearing them for general use but more importantly when you eat. Are you having them made by your dentist or a denture studio ?? I've just had a new lower partial made by a denture studio - the difference is amazing, don't really know I'm wearing it. Not only that but his charges were approx 50% less than my dentist !! Good luck

Had two dental implants done last year, and the dentist gave me a prescription for a tranquilliser to take beforehand. Helped a lot.
You'll need some one to drive you there and back if necessary.
FBG- can I ask what would be the difference between a dentist and and a denture studio - like did you get impressions like a dentist or what other procedures differ from the regular dentist. Thanks
Hi Hettster
The difference is that all dentures are made on site, whereas the dentist has to send the impressions away to make the dentures (in the case of my dentist that is). Not only that but the "Dental Technician" is specifically trained to take impressions and make the dentures.I had to go for 4 or 5 impressions and "test fitting" before the technician was satisfied that the denture was ok. The cost of a chromium cobalt denture (lower) from my dentist was £900 - from the denture studio £495, a lot of difference. Hope this helps.

I have an almost identical situation. Have a partial denture up top for 5 teeth, and will need one for 3 teeth at the bottom. Will be certain of what is needed early January. Took me only 2 or 3 days to adapt to the top denture, fixadent is good, but after 2 years, my gums have receded further, so that needs replacing. I remove the denture at night and try to remember to put it back before I see anyone!!! Please don't worry.

I am slightly concerned about having 3 lower teeth removed, but all will be ok.

Just think.........a visit to the hygienist (which I absolutely hate, lovely though she is) should no longer be necessary! Good luck, and wish me luck also. Have a great Christmas.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to all who have contributed in answering my question. Time draws near for the procedure, extractions to be done 1st thing Thursday morning. I am wondering if there are any tips for immediate aftercare, for example I have been told that eating salted crisps post procedure can help expedite the healing process. . .
Also how do I adapt to the dentures . . .Yes I know it shows .. I am getting worried . . . . deep breaths . . . deep breathes
Hettster, I feel your anxiety and frankly who wouldn't be anxious - I went today for a small procedure and of course it was nowhere near as bad as feared.

You should be given very clear after care instructions, try to follow them to the letter.

Wishing you strength and bravery for Thursday. x
Gargle with salt water- it tastes rank, but it doesn't half speed up the healing process.

I've got just one tooth on a dental plate, and it did take some getting used to, can't begin to imagine what 14 feel like! Good luck, you have my very best wishes as I am petrified of dentists at the best of times, im sure you'll be far braver than I was!
