Wow - what effects this has. Suggested by the quack to get weight off me quickly with the benefits of, hopefully, no blood pressure pills, reduced risk of gout and Diabetes 2. I wasn't there on DB2 and my blood was okay, however, as he said, there was a risk.

As near zero as I can get for three weeks, then I can bring it up by 5g a week, the idea to create ketogenesis in the body to convert fat into energy.

Side effects, incredibly fatigued after about 9pm, and I won't go into the side effects down under but for one, a lot more peeing. My own guestimate is that some two to three pounds are off me already. Can feel it on my rear and belt.

The diet, protein and lots of veg and fruit, tonight lamb chops pan roasted with a little garlic and chilli, roasted cauli, beet and chicory, some french beans steamed. A green apple later. Cheese omlette this morning and an apple.....

Any good (unusual) recipes for no carbs?

I always use wholegrain pasta and rice. They are both very tasty.
I would have liked this level of response to my thread here

http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Body-and-Soul/Question1393966.html

but the forum software wouldn't let me directly select weight loss and dieting as the subject category, for some reason.

Anyway, the ketogenesis thing was one of the strategies tried in the TV prog I mentioned.
So pup has lost out tonight, well done DTC and Donald, Minty too, I'm keeping very quiet, had bloods etc done today
Sorry, Hypo, didn't see it

okay, Psybbs?

American 'black' wild rice is fine, but then it isn't technically a rice....delish with a duck breast, no fat, and a blueberry sauce with dijon mustard and basalmic in it, french beans to go with it....a great recipe from the Canyon Ranch cookbooks, the equiv of Champneys over here.....
Similar approach worked like a charm for me DT. Blood pressure down to normal, joint paint much reduced, wish I'd done it years ago.
Plus, eating mostly proteins and few carbs means I don't experience sudden hypos any more, which have plagued me for decades.
Downside - occasional constipation - gel suppositories, sorted.
I'll know next week DTC

Thanks, Mosaic, yes, the changes down there are quite remarkable - it's all the porridge and fibre!

Good luck, fingers crossed, Psybbs....there's always an e-mail.....

and of course a xxx to Psybbs....
All of these diets are offshoots of the Atkins diet and Dr Atkins was completely vilified but everything he said about fat being OK and carbs (ie sugar) being the enemy is coming true. I did the Atkins diet a couple of times many years ago. The last time I did it was because I wanted to get into a tight-fitting coat for a friend`s wedding. I only did it for a week but lost about 7 lbs. I did it while working an arduous week and felt completely drained but I wasn`t bothered about that. Boy, did the weight come back on quickly when I stopped the diet. I don`t really like sweet things so avoiding fruit etc was no problem. For breakfast, I would eat something like poached egg, bacon and a large pile of mushrooms. I ate a lot of cheese as well but always used half fat cheese. It was a very easy diet to follow. If I went out for a curry, I would have a veg curry or side dish instead of rice which worked really well. BTW - if you`re in Twickenham, go to Moiduls Rawalpindi for a good curry (they have a cheap 'special' on a Thursday night)

I'll be in Twickenham on Saturday for the rugby!

Actually, it was an Icelandic, Vilhjalmur Stefansson, who came up with the original concept, putting two and two together on the Inuit diet....Atkins is just a variety of that. Reading between the lines and talking to the quack, it's how you emerge from the purgatory that is important, a slow intro of carbs back into the diet but ending up not stashing away quite as many ciabatta, teacakes, pasta and the occasional (dry) chip (like a Belgian one).
That`s what Atkins suggested DT. You cut out carbs completely for the first two weeks and then you re-introduce them by very small amounts until you get to the point where you are no longer losing weight but are not gaining weight either. That is (supposedly) your perfect carbs level.

That latter part I didn't know, SJ, thanks......I am under a 'discreet' doctor's gun on this one, if I need him and the one I am dealing with is more of a friend than my usual quack, who is off trying to career with gusto, if not technique, down the slopes of Chamonix.
Not a food suggestion, but,as you're weeing a lot more, make sure you have more fluids than usual. Dehydration can result in horrendous leg or feet cramps, as I unfortunately experienced!
Question Author
thanks for the tip bunkmoreland, I have upped the fluid intake - tends to be a 'feature' when I have dieted in the past.
The low carb diet predates Atkins by about 100 years. It was first publicised in a pamphlettby William Banting...an undertaker who went low carb on the advice of his physician. In fact low carbing is referred to as 'Banting' in south africa now.
I've been low carbing for almost 4 years-started as a means to lose weight, and it was so easy...its now a way of life for me. I've done Keto...and felt very well doing it...good energy. There is lots to read, and a number of good websites/forums for information. Its the way of the future,as current research is disproving the low calorie/low fat nonsense that has actually made us fatter. You have a well informed doctor...good luck.
Question Author
thanks, Pasta.....the only side effects have really been the late evening fatigue, not too bad tonight, and a little bit of being a space cadet in the morning....
Well done DTc, I have been to see my GP for a general checkup. my blood pressure is up and I am borderline diabetic and I am quite a lot overweight. So I need to do something fast. I'm trying to lose weight but I could eat anything right now. I've put a jumper because my arms are beginning look attractive. I have to see my GP next week with a view to taking BP tablets, which I really don't want to do. I'm finding it difficult to find nice meals to prepare each day, we've never been dieters before.
I'm going to get howled down for this, but I'll say it anyway
try eating a bit less, doing a bit more and settling for a steady pound a week loss that stays off
