A week yesterday I was given a 5 day course of amoxicillin for a chest infection. I went back to my doctor yesterday as I am still coughing up the green phlegm on a morning. He sounded my chest and it was clear, no crackles or anything and said I will probably have a bit of inflammation on my lungs. I do feel a heck of a lot better than I did but how long does phlegm take to clear after a chest infection? Is there anything that helps to break it down?

Could take a couple of weeks at least.

Yes, things called mucolytic agents, but there is a great debate as to whether they are effective, but inhaled steroids are the best.

You sound as though you are recovering well.....stop worrying.
After a couple weeks of misery I finally went to see my GP. Course of amoxycillin for 5 days made little difference. Just beginning to feel 100% after 5 weeks - this bug likes to take its time!!
