A friend told me that if you just think cucumber tastes of nothing much, a bit watery and quite refreshing, then you can't actually taste it.  She said that some people have a gene which means they taste it differently and usually really hate it.  I can't find anything to back this up.  Has anyone heard this or is my friend talking out of her proverbial?

i can spot cucumber in dishes at 100 paces.  I can't bear the smell of it never mind the taste.  AND it comtaminates everything it comes into contact with - just poking it out of a salad does not work.  Sorry this doesn't answer your question.
I'm with maxd- it's vile stuff and food of the devil. It does have a taste and it's ruddy 'orrible!
love it love it love it love it love it! but i can't answer your question though, sorry!
Also again can't answer your question but agree it is the most foul food in the world. I can taste it through hot piri piri sauce when it is only tiny.

It would deem to be your friend is telling the truth as it seems the three of us have a very violent reaction to something that most people find tasteless!!

Garnier do a wonderful cucumber facewash.

I have a friend who says that about cucumber too. She really thinks it has no taste.

I think it has a very definite flavour. Cucumber flavoured!!!

No scientific facts to back up your friend's claim though. Sorry.

I grew my own cucumbers this year, from the vine to the table in 5 minutes with incredibly intense flavour.

I suspect it's one of those where age is everything

Thanks guys.  I think that my friend may be talking poopoo but it certainly seems that there is quite a polarisation of views... I think it is OK, nothing much really, but can't imagine how people think it is totally vile!  I mean it's not exactly marmite is it, it is something like 96% water.  Must be a reason for it I guess.  When I am have retired from saving the world from diseases through the power of numbers I shall turn my hand to unravelling The Cucumber Enigma (sounds like a Robert Ludlum book doesn't it).
I don't like cuccumber either and it does leave a vile taste behind even if you pick it out. YUK
I like cucumber, think that it has a definite taste and smell. Its really good with a little sugar on!

Your friend is correct - there is a gene which causes some people to have a sort of 'super tastebud' which means that lots of foods taste very strongly.

I'm firmly in the 'I loathe cucumber' camp and in fact can't bear any green vegetable at all.

CUCUMBER IS VILE, i cannot stand the stuff.
