since last Tuesday. Started off with the usual tickly cough, sneezing etc. I have not been able to sleep due to cough. Anyway what is worrying me now is that I have some bad nose bleeds today, they just come on suddenly, last for 5 - 10 mins, the blood is really bright red, yesterday it was just from one nostril, now it's both, anyone able to tell me I'm not dying.

Puss, can you get to A&E
you are not dying but think you need to get some medical help asap. how soon can you get to see someone?
I often get nosebleeds when I have a bad cold, and it is always bright red.
Are you taking Aspirin ?
If you're posting on here you're not dying. Need to get yourself to the quacks for reassurance though.
Possibly burst vessels from the coughing. Bright red is better than dark, as it's fresh and not from stomach. See someone as soon as you can, though.

A & E is not what I had in mind because I didn't think it was an emergency but GP is tomorrow. When the nose bleeds happen ( and 3 now) it's like the chain saw massacre in my bathroom.

No I am not on aspirin or any other blood thining meds.
Pixie is bang on there regarding the bright red blood, it's when the blood is dark you need worry, here's a link may be informative to you and reassure you, you're not dying

Thanks for the link ducksie.
Hope you rest well now pussnboots.
I hope you feel better soon, blood always looks worse, and causes panic, you'll be ok soon, I know you will, just don't panic
Sorry to hear about this, Puss. Hope it's soon sorted.
Puss - I remember that my mother suddenly started having nosebleeds in her 60s having suffered them as a child, but not in between. The GP sent her to hospital - to seal up the week veins where the blood was breaking through. It's a horrible experience, I sympathise - but do see your GP in case there is something going on, particularly as you've not suffered from this before. Is your BP usually OK?
Question Author
boxtops.. my BP is checked every 6 months and always ok, I do take BP meds tho.
Nosebleeds during colds are very common, with blowing and sneezing you are constantly reopening the capillaries. Remember to tilt head slightly forward whilst pinching high up on the nose to stop.

So many people tip their head back.

Thanks folks for all your input, I do feel more reassured now that I may live past tonight. This thing I have had is a lot more than a common cold, it has floored me now all week, I had a Flu jab last October and have never in all the years before the jab have I ever felt so ill.
Check in with surgery tomorrow, if only for reassurance - hope you get some sleep.
puss. as you obviously feel so awful would you maybe go to an out of hours surgery ?
I was thinking that, anne - if there's a minor injury unit they'd also help (but probably shut now until the morning).
