I was speaking to someone tonight who said they wake up in the middle of the night and have 'suicidal thoughts' for the first few moments they wake up and then once they've woken up properly these thoughts disappear.

They said they wake up and feel like they don't want to live anymore yet don't wont to die.

She said she feels fine through out the day and never has these thoughts until she wakes up in the night.

Is this some sort of depression creeping in and should she seek help?

Thanks

Apart from mental illness there is something called Sleep Paralysis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis and this is acutally quite common. If they are generally happy with their life and it doesn't impinge on their overall mood, then I would advise them to accept that it is a sort of 'twilight' experience.

If it bothers them , then yes ask for some advice.
I think a lot of people feel quite low when they first wake up - whether it is in the middle of the night or any other time. If those thoughts are fleeting and they don`t linger into the day, then I think your friend shouldn`t worry too much about it.

I would not wish any type of mental illness on my worse enemy. I often wish I had a 'delete' button that just end it all.
Would that were possible Wolf - (hug)

Thanks for your replies, wolf you hit the nail on the head with the 'delete button' quote.

She said the same sort of thing, if she could end it all there and then she would but once she's awake and up and about these thoughts go
Check any medication - I had this with B\P meds changed and all clear
ask her what medication if any she is on, that can be a factor.
Statins can cause this type of thing, I know of 2 people who had to come off them because of the effect on their mental health ..
in fact one should read any leaflet thoroughly no matter how disturbing on all medications, as there are some which say quite clearly can bring on suicidal thoughts, and not just mental health meds.
I was going to say check meds too as I've had suicidal thoughts from some pain medication (pregabalin) when the dose was upped quickly (on GP advice).
eve, can i ask how you fare on the pregabalin, as i have been prescribed it, but have yet to face taking it, looked at the list of possible side effects, even the mild ones and it's horrendous. I have had another type of nerve pain relief in the last month that made the room spin constantly and made me slur my words, felt truly dreadful
It could be maybe down to a re occurring dream if she never has these thoughts through the day?
