Ten-year-old son complained yesterday of being "always thirsty". Out of interest, i, er, asked to borrow client's blood sugar machine (as you do) and have now scared myself. His reading is 14.9. Have tried to google normal range for children, but getting contradictory answers. Do i need to book a GP appointment?
thanks x

Seems borderline/normal to me, but with the history of "always thirsty" I would get an appt for to your GP...........no urgency.

Try the official Diabetes website. Or Netdoctor or NHS.
Yes, take him to the doctor.

Thanks. Will look on diabetes site first x
It's high according to this, but don't take our word for it, not an expert http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/blood-sugar-level-ranges.html

I'd see the GP or practice nurse, and they'll take a little blood for testing.
Had he eaten anything before the the blood sugar measurement?

Thanks all. I hope I'm sorted now. Just went up to speak to him and he admitted eating a penguin in bed. Hmmm. Just redid it and it's 5.2 now. I might retake first thing in the morning and just see.
I may have panicked a bit. Sorry! X
No need to apologise. Better safe than sorry.

Thank you. Will keep an eye for couple of days and ring doctor Monday if any doubt. That'll teach him to steal chocolate. Sore fingers!
Pixie.....I will be interested in the results! but test him before his meals.

14.9 is not normal even if he did eat a penguin. Type2 is not unknown in children but is usually associated with obesity which I assume is not the case here. Take him to the docs.
TBH he might just have been thirsty yesterday because of something else he'd eaten? Bacon sandwiches do that for me!
mmm Bacon sandwiches! Going to go make one right now. Sorry, to hijack Pixie, but Boxtops mentioned Bacon Sandwiches! :)

Would quite fancy bacon sandwich myself, lg!
Did before breakfast this morning- 6.6
what do you think?
I would be concerned with that reading.
Normal reference range for children of that age would be broadly in line with the adults reference range for blood glucose.

Consistent fasting blood sugar levels over 6 might suggest impaired glucose tolerance, so it might be worth scheduling a visit to the GP, IMO.
I had my diabetic uncle living with me and was told it should be below 5.

Ok. Thank you, all. I will ring doctor's Monday and see if they'll test him x
I would ring the local drop in clinic and ask for their advice rather than wait until your GP surgery opens on monday.
Seems borderline/normal to me, but with the history of "always thirsty" I would get an appt for to your GP...........no urgency.
ummmm....below 5 would be verging on a hypoglycaemic attack......there must be some mistake.
